Bihar Police use water cannon at RJD march towards Lok Bhavan in Patna over paper leaks, unemployment | Watch

RJD MP Manoj Jha condemned recurring paper leaks and unemployment issues plaguing Bihar's youth. The party intends to present a memorandum to the Governor while raising concerns about police violence during protests, highlighting the urgency for solutions rather than empty promises.Police use water cannons to disperse RJD supporters during a protest march towards the Lok Bhawan against the dictatorial attitude of the state government and over the alleged firing of an AK-47 rifle against student protesters in Siwan district last month, in Patna, Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026. (PTI)The Bihar Police on Wednesday used water cannon to disperse Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leaders and workers who were carrying out a foot march towards Lok Bhavan in Patna over issues of paper leaks, unemployment and problems faced by students and youth in the state. The march was held following RJD leader and Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Yadav's announcement of a protest march to Raj Bhavan over the alleged collapse of the examination system and law and order situation in the state.RJD march in PatnaRJD MP Manoj Jha said students and youth across the country, particularly in Bihar, were angry over recurring paper leaks and unemployment."Students and youth across the country, especially in Bihar, are angry. Paper leaks have become a pattern. Young people can no longer bear the burden of unemployment. They do not want rhetoric; they want solutions," Jha told ANI.RJD MLA Alok Kumar Mehta said the party was marching with students and youth to submit a memorandum to the Governor highlighting their concerns, including the issue of paper leaks."It is our right, and when the government does not listen, the Governor is the constitutional custodian of the state. Under the senior leadership, we are going with the youth and students of Bihar. We will submit a memorandum to the Governor regarding students' problems, including the paper leak issue," Mehta said.RJD MP Misa Bharti also raised the issue of police: a police constable firing an AK-47 rifle during a student protest in Bihar's Siwan district last month."We have heard that the Bihar government in the Supreme Court has admitted that the AK-47 was used (against students). The Bihar govt should have been asked by the court who permitted the use of AK-47 in a protest. If the DM gave permission, he should be suspended. This Bihar govt is killing the future of students of Bihar," she said.Police will use excessive force: Tejashwi YadavEarlier, on Tuesday, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav expressed apprehension about "excessive use of force" by the administration during the party's march to Lok Bhavan. At a press conference, he claimed student leaders were being "rounded up" and "many youths may be prevented from boarding trains" to join the march."We have learnt that the police has picked up many student leaders in Patna and they might stop youths from boarding trains tomorrow when they are likely to join us in large numbers," he said."Our spirits are not down, but we do suspect that tomorrow police may take recourse to excessive use of force like it had done against students in the recent past," the RJD working president said.He demanded an inquiry to ascertain "on whose orders" a police constable in Siwan district "opened fire from an AK-47" during the state-wide student protest on July 25.Get Latest real-time updatesStay updated with the latest Trending, India, World and US news. From ₹1 crore at 34 to ₹7.5 crore at 37: Indian consultant in Middle East shares wealth journey; internet reacts

Declassified: Operation Sindoor featured accounts from leaders including NSA Ajit Doval and Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi about the operation. The modules are aimed at familiarising students with the country’s military prowess during Operation Sindoor (AFP)Operation Sindoor carried out by Indian Armed forces is perhaps still giving Pakistani establishment sleepless nights. In a 600+word social media statement shared post midnight, the Pakistani Army reacted to the documentary series on Discovery about India’s Operation Sindoor launched in response to the deadlly Pahalgam terror attack of April 2025.The two-part documentary Declassified: Operation Sindoor, which premiered on August 15, features senior Indian military and security officials who were involved in the planning and execution of the operation, which was launched on May 7, 2025.The 2 AM statementIn a statement issued on social media at 2 AM, the Director General of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the official spokesperson of the Pakistan Armed Forces, said: “Indian content creators have produced a highly dramatised, coloured and factually inaccurate account of so-called Operation Sindoor, packaged as a documentary featuring senior political and military leadership of India.”According to DGISPR, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif, Declassified: Operation Sindoor, lack of nuance and seriousness.Pakistan also claimed that the documentary’s account contains fundamental contradictions, including on the Pahalgam terror attack and how Operation Sindoor ended.Declassified: Operation Sindoor featured accounts from leaders including NSA Ajit Doval and Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi about the operation.Doval said India's generosity and tolerance should not be mistaken for weakness, asserting that the country can take risks and hit hard, irrespective of the consequences. The objective of the military operation, he said, was to destroy enemy camps, particularly those responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed.Pakistan alleged that through the documentary, India has attempted to establish a deliberate linkage between an address by Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff on 16 April 2025 and the Pahalgam terror attack of 22 April 2025.DGISPR also repeated the unsubstantiated claims made by US President Donald Trump on multiple occasions about Pakistan shooting down Indian fighter jets.“Pakistan’s Armed Forces successfully thwarted Indian aggression and shot down 8 military aircraft. Pakistan subsequently conducted Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, employing Fatah precision-guided rockets & missiles, PAF precision munitions, long-range loitering munitions and precision artillery against 26 military targets, including facilities used to target Pakistani citizens,” the post on X said. The military conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, lasting nearly four days, halted after they reached an understanding on the evening of May 10.DGISPR claimed that the documentary’s account of the cessation of hostilities is no less revealing.“Its own narration confirms that hostilities ended through communication between the two DGMOs and an agreed cessation of military action,” DGISPR said, adding that “A cessation of hostilities, facilitated by US, cannot subsequently be repurposed as evidence of unconditional victory.”About the AuthorBobins Vayalil AbrahamBobins loves telling the human side of all stories, from the intersection of geopolitics, international relations, and conflicts around the world. Handmade poster, memes, sudden box office boon: What is the hype behind ‘worse than AI’ Chinese animated film Niu Lai?

Low-budget Chinese animated movie, Niu Lai is about a newborn calf and his journey to find courage and grow into a warrior. It was released on 5 August.Niu Lai director announces next project. Some movies instantly become hits in theatres, while others disappear just as quickly. But the recently released Chinese animated film Niu Lai has turned out to be an unusual case. Mocked so much that it has now become a box office hit, even competing with Tom Holland's Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. So what is the craze behind it?Decoding Niu Lai box office successNiu Lai is a low-budget animation film about a cow in a dream sequence. The film, which has been severely criticised on the internet, grossed 7,705 yuan ($1,140 or ₹1.09 lakh) in its first 10 days at the box office. But now, it has made more than 11.4 million yuan, as per tracking site Mao Yan.The film witnessed a huge growth in footfall and ticket sales after it went viral across social media over its confusing plot and poor graphics."You may regret for 80 minutes if you watch it, but if you don't, you'll regret it for life," BBC quoted a social media post about Niu Lai.Zero promotion, 'hand-crafted'Reportedly, the film had no promotional poster, trailer, publicity or promotional tour.“With almost no marketing budget but plenty of unexpected hype, Niu Lai has cinemas across China making their own promotional posters by hand. Theater staff are putting their finest artistic skills to work,” reported Shanghai Daily. While some on the internet dubbed the film as ‘worse than AI’, a section of people jokingly argued that it was " hand-crafted ".About Niu LaiNiu Lai (translated to The Cow Is Coming in English) is an 86-minute animated film. The film revolves around a newborn calf and its journey as it grows up. It is said that the film took more than five years to be completed by director Xin Yumeng and his mother, Sun Lifan, with no budget. The film was released on 5 August.Director reacts“If we focused all our energy on rendering precision, this film would never have been made. Between perceiving details and the overall narrative, I chose to let the story run first,” Xin Yumeng said in a radio interview for Entrepreneurial Youth Talk, as per Wenxue City.He added that he prioritised the overall story over polishing every other visual detail in the film. He believed that the audience wasn't going to inspect “every hair under a microscope”.Reportedly, Xin has moved on to his next project. This time the production has begun working on his next animated film, Yang Gao, or Sheep High. He updated about his upcoming film, “we won’t have to wait five years”.About the AuthorSneha BiswasSneha Biswas specialises in covering entertainment and pop culture, with a specialisation on Bollywood, Hollywood, OTT platforms, K-pop, K-dramas, and major developments in the US entertainment industry. Jharkhand job exam row: Students agree to fresh talks with govt on Aug 17, maintain demands

In an interview with ANI, Rijiju, however, said that while the concerns raised by protesting students are genuine, Arvind Kejriwal-led party attempted to ‘hijack’ the movement for its own ends.Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke after an interview with PTI, in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, Monday, Aug. 3, 2026. (PTI Photo) (PTI08_03_2026_000178B)(PTI)Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has targeted Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke alleging he is a worker of Aam Aadmi Party worker who attempted to pass himself off as a student leader in the youth-led protests at Jantar Mantar.Rijiju, however, said that while the concerns raised by protesting students are genuine, Arvind Kejriwal-led party attempted to "hijack" the movement for its own ends.Responding to a question on whether he appreciated the emergence of young leadership through the recent student-led movements, Rijiju said the government takes student grievances seriously but drew a distinction between student activism and political opportunism."The students' concerns are valid, but the attempt by the Aam Aadmi Party and others to hijack the situation is not right. Abhijeet Dipke is our own boy from Maharashtra, but he is an Aam Aadmi Party worker. How cam he be a 'student'?" Rijiju is heard saying in the ANI interview.Dipke had previously worked with the Aam Aadmi Party before the beginning of the satirical movement, the Cockroach Janta Party, which came after Chief Justice of India Surya Kant's remarks about ‘cockroaches’ during a Supreme Court hearing.Dipke has not been assoicated with AAP after 2023 after which he went to the US for higher studies.Dipke returned to India from the US in June this year to lead an agitation against the NEET-UG paper leakthat saw youth from different parts of the country converge at Delhi's Jantar Mantar to demand reforms and the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan as the Union education minister. Pradhan resigned on 25 July. Dipke's CJP saw support from various political parties, including AAP.Dipke gets NDA minister's offerRijiu’s remarks came a day after another union minister, Ramdas Athawale offered Dipke to join his party - Republican Party of India (Athawale) or the RPI (A).Athawale, Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, said on Monday that Dipke should join RPI (A) to fulfil Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's dream, strengthen society and the party.Athwale's party, the Republican Party of India (A) is part of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the Centre.“I think Abhijeet Dipke is an Ambedkarite. He is active and young. He should consider joining Republic Party of India (A),” Athwale was quoted as saying by news agencies in Nagpur on Monday, 17 August. In the ANI interview, Rijiju added that the government remains open to engaging directly with students over their genuine demands, but accused political parties of exploiting the movement following electoral setbacks."Students have a certain passion, and one can engage in dialogue with them, but when political parties try to grind their own political axes by hiding behind students- that is simply not right," he said. The students' concerns are valid, but the attempt by the Aam Aadmi Party and others to hijack the situation is not right. The CJP has cleared that it is going to remain as a pressure group. "We are not forming a political party; we will operate solely as a pressure group." It is currently conducting a 'School Thik Karo' campaign to highlight the issues present in government schools in villages.(With ANI inputs)About the AuthorGulam JeelaniGulam Jeelani is Political Desk Editor at LiveMint with over 16 years of experience covering national and international politics. Trump administration moves ahead to rescind rule that protects national forests, open them up for logging

Trump administration plans to rescind the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule, lifting restrictions on logging and mining in national forests. This change aims to empower local managers to improve forest health, despite concerns about increased wildfire risks and impacts on ecosystems.A sign gives directions to the Bridger-Teton National Forest on Sept. 19, 2021 in Wyoming. (AP)The Trump administration announced Tuesday it is moving ahead with plans to rescind a quarter-century-old rule that blocked logging, road building and other development on national forest lands. The proposed rule filed by the US Forest Service would rescind the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule, which bans logging, road construction, and mining in undeveloped forests, and transfer authority to local national forest managers, according to a press release from the Department of Agriculture.Roadless Area Conservation RuleThen-President Bill Clinton had signed the rule to safeguard undeveloped national forest land from commercial logging and mineral leasing, to keep ecosystems pristine and protect water supplies. The Roadless Rule limits development on nearly 59 million acres of forest, about 30% of the National Forest System. The agency described the Clinton-era rule as a one-size-fits-all restriction that has frustrated land managers and served as a barrier to reducing wildfire risks in the nation’s forests.“Our forests can’t afford another decade of inaction. Across the country, we’ve watched preventable conditions — overgrown stands, insect outbreaks and disease — turn healthy landscapes into tinderboxes,” US Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said in a statement.According to the Associated Press, Rollins said the Trump administration’s proposal calls for restoring authority to local forest managers and removing barriers that have kept them from improving forest health across millions of acres. The Trump administration first announced its intention to get rid of the 2001 rule during a meeting last summer in New Mexico, even as environmental groups opposed the move, arguing that it would increase wildfire risk.Environmentalists warn of more wildfiresThe US is suffering one of its worst years for wildfires, with 7.3 million acres burned in around 49,000 fires through August 17, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.Scientists say that worsening wildfires are driven by a combination of climate change that warms and dries out forests, less logging and decades of fire suppression that has allowed fuels to build up.Environmentalists have been sounding the alarm since then and reiterated Tuesday that lifting protections would have detrimental effects for old growth forests, wildlife and water supplies.“Americans across the political spectrum have made it crystal clear that they don’t want political appointees removing protections from public lands,” said Chris Krupp, an attorney with the group WildEarth Guardians. “It would be a gross misreading of public sentiment to take the roadless rule away from Americans and our wildlife, and politicians do so at their jeopardy.”During the latter part of Trump’s first term, the federal government lifted restrictions on logging and road-building in Alaska’s Tongass National Forest, something the Biden administration later reversed.Emma Powell, the Alaska Wilderness League's government affairs manager, described the Tongass as a global treasure that serves as a home for salmon runs and abundant wildlife. She added that cultures and livelihoods are connected to the forest.“From fisheries to tourism and outdoor recreation, these landscapes also support thousands of jobs and generate billions in economic activity each year,” Powell was quoted as saying by AP.David Jenkins, president of the Virginia-based nonprofit Conservatives for Responsible Stewardship, criticized the proposal as fiscally irresponsible and pointed to an existing maintenance backlog that stretches into the billions of dollars.“The agency doe

Erin Patterson, Australia’s ‘Mushroom Murderer,’ Appeals Verdict

Australian triple murderer Erin Patterson will appeal her convictions in a Melbourne court, the latest chapter in a long-running true crime saga that has riveted global audiences and become known as the Mushroom Murders.Erin Patterson, Australia’s ‘Mushroom Murderer,’ Appeals Verdict(Bloomberg) -- Australian triple murderer Erin Patterson will appeal her convictions in a Melbourne court, the latest chapter in a long-running true crime saga that has riveted global audiences and become known as the Mushroom Murders. Patterson was found guilty in July 2025 of poisoning four relatives with death cap mushrooms, killing three of them. The victims included her parents-in-law, Don and Gail Patterson, as well as Gail’s sister Heather Wilkinson. She was also found guilty of attempted murder in the case of Wilkinson’s husband, Ian. Patterson was given three life sentences, with no chance of parole for 33 years. She will be in her early 80s before she is eligible for release. Patterson is appealing her verdict at hearings scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, claiming that there were miscarriages of justice in her original trial. In addition, her lawyers describe a “fundamental irregularity” during jury sequestering that requires her convictions to be quashed, followed by a re-trial. Patterson is not expected to appear in court during the hearings. At the same time, the prosecution is appealing Patterson’s sentence, describing the 33-year non-parole period as “manifestly inadequate.”The Mushroom Murders drew crowds of journalists to the small Australian town of Leongatha, in Victoria state about two hours from Melbourne. Patterson maintained her innocence throughout the trial, where she was accused of cooking the meal containing so-called death cap mushrooms for a family lunch in July 2023.Patterson’s legal team said the poisoning had been a tragic accident, while the prosecution pointed to her cooking individual portions of the meal and putting them on differently colored plates. In his ruling, the judge said the alternate plates were so she could identify which ones were poisonous. More stories like this are available on bloomberg.com©2026 Bloomberg L.P.Stay updated with the latest Trending, India, World and US news. Quote of the Day by Cate Blanchett: ‘If you know you are going to fail, then fail gloriously!’

Quote of the Day by Cate Blanchett: ‘If you know you are going to fail, then fail gloriously!’

Jean-Paul Sartre’s words on humanity and creation offer a reflection on freedom, identity and the instinct to shape the world around us rather than simply exist within it.Jean-Paul Sartre’s reflection on the human desire to create connects identity, freedom and purpose in a single thought."To desire to be a human is to desire to create"– Jean-Paul SatreThe quote captures a central idea in the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre, the French philosopher, playwright and novelist whose work became closely associated with existentialism.Meaning and relevance of the quoteSartre spent much of his career examining questions of freedom, responsibility, choice and what it means for people to give meaning to their own lives. At the heart of the quote is the idea that being human involves more than simply existing. To desire to create is to want to leave some form of imprint on the world, whether through art, ideas, relationships, work or personal choices.Creation, in this sense, does not have to mean producing a painting, writing a novel or inventing something new. It can also mean deliberately building a life rather than accepting one decided by circumstances. The thought is particularly relevant to Sartre’s wider philosophy. He argued that human beings are not born with a fixed purpose that determines every aspect of their lives. Instead, people continually define themselves through the decisions they make. Creation therefore becomes an expression of freedom: each choice can contribute to the person one becomes. The quote also suggests that the human urge to create is closely connected to the desire for individuality. When someone creates, they transform an idea, feeling or possibility into something that exists beyond the moment. It is an attempt to shape reality rather than simply respond to it.A similar idea can be found in another well-known saying: “Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.” Often attributed to Confucius, the quote encourages people to look beyond unnecessary complications and focus on what gives life meaning.Taken alongside Sartre’s words, it can be read as a reminder that purpose does not always need to be discovered somewhere outside ourselves. People can give shape to their lives through what they choose to value, pursue and create.Sartre’s quote ultimately presents creation as more than an act of making something. It becomes a way of expressing freedom, defining identity and giving direction to existence. In that sense, the desire to create becomes inseparable from the desire to live deliberately and meaningfully.About the AuthorTrisha BhattacharyaTrisha Bhattacharya is a Senior Content Producer at Livemint, with over two years of experience covering entertainment news from India and beyond.
