Indian Students Recalibrate Overseas Medical Choices as New Destinations Gain Ground

3 min readNew DelhiUpdated: Jun 1, 2026 03:44 AM IST Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi interacts with a group of students in Delhi, Sunday. (PTI)LOK SABHA Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Sunday targeted the Centre over the CBSE On-Screen Marking (OSM) row, and put out a video of his interaction with a group of students, describing them as brave young Indians who asked the Modi government simple questions but received “insults instead of answers”. Asserting that the students deserved a bright future, Gandhi said: “We will make sure they get it.” Posting the video on social media, Gandhi described the interaction as a “revealing chat with my fellow ‘anti-national Soros agents’.” “Vedant and his friends are brilliant, brave young Indians who asked CBSE and the Modi government simple questions — but got insults instead of answers,” Gandhi said in his post on X, with the video of his interaction.Vedant, a Class 12 student, had alleged on social media that the answer script uploaded to him by CBSE during the verification process was not his own. He claimed the handwriting, answers, and even attempted questions did not match with what he had written in the examination hall. His posts went viral, prompting widespread scrutiny over the CBSE’s evaluation and OSM systems. Gandhi is seen having an informal chat with Vedant and other students about their experiences. He also joked about how they were labelled “Pakistanis” and “deep state agents” after raising what he called legitimate concerns and issues. You are refusing to accept the problem and blaming the poor kids and saying ‘you are deep state, you are spies, terrorists’,” Gandhi says in the video, attacking the government over the OSM controversy. “Were you also called terrorists? Tell me!” Gandhi asks Vedant, his brother and some other students in the 90-second clip, apparently part of a larger interaction. Said ‘NO’ to dream Amazon job for this reason — US recruiter shares hidden cost of saying ‘Yes’ to the wrong job

Turning down a lucrative offer from a tech giant in this tight job market sounds almost like career suicide. However, after six months of rigorous preparation and interviewing, one candidate said a hard “NO” to their dream job at Amazon. The reason? A conversation with the hiring manager. While the candidate's friends and family questioned their sanity, a US recruiter backed the decision and warned that accepting an offer out of sheer exhaustion carries a massive, invisible price tag.“NO” to AmazonIn a viral LinkedIn post, Shreya Mehta, a US-based recruiter, shared that she knows someone who rejected a job offer from Amazon. “This was the role they had been targeting for six months. They had prepared for it, interviewed for it, and when the offer came through, everyone around them expected them to say yes immediately.”However, she shared that during the final conversation with the hiring manager, the candidate realised that the day-to-day work at Amazon “did not align with where they wanted to take their career long term. The title matched. The company matched. But the actual role did not.” — So they said NO.Mehta said that almost everyone in their life told them they were making a mistake. “In this market? You are turning down Amazon? Are you serious?”As a recruiter, she said she understands the reaction — “I get it. I really do. The market is tough right now.”However, she said there is a hidden cost to saying “yes” to the wrong role, and sometimes holding out might just save your resume.“When you have been job searching for months, when you have been ghosted and rejected over and over again, the temptation to accept anything that comes your way is undeniable. Any offer feels like relief. Any yes feels like the end of a nightmare,” Mehta wrote.Hidden cost of saying “yes”Shreya Mehta highlighted that when someone accepts a role they know is not right because they are exhausted from searching, they are set back 2 months.“They start the job. Within a few weeks, they realise it is exactly what they feared. The work does not excite them. The growth is not there,” she said. “The misalignment they felt during the interview shows up every single day.”Two months later, the US recruiter said they are back on the market. “Except now they have a two-month stint on their resume that they have to explain in every future interview. And that is harder to navigate than a gap.”“Accepting the wrong job and leaving in 60 days can set you back further than continuing your search for the right one,” she noted. In the viral post, Mehta clarified that she isn't asking candidates to be “reckless with your decisions” — “If you need income and stability, that is a real factor, and nobody should judge you for it.”But, she said, “if you have the ability to hold out, trust what your gut is telling you during that final conversation with the hiring manager.”Defending the no to Amazon, Mehta said, “The goal was never just to get a job. The goal was to land the right one.”Here's how netizens reacted:Social media users backed the candidate's decision and said, “professionals only learn this distinction after making an expensive career mistake.”A user said, “It takes courage to say no when everything around you says yes, especially after a long search. Short-term relief can easily override long-term fit, but clarity about direction matters more in the end.”“This is such an important perspective. A big company name means very little if the role itself takes you further away from the career and work you actually want long-term. Intelligence is saying no with complete conviction, not out of fear of trying,” another added.“A job offer can solve a short-term problem. A career decision should solve a long-term one,” a user highlighted.Another recruiter shared, “One of my clients rejected an offer from Google for a similar reason. Later, Google came back with what she wanted. Do not accept something if it doesn't align with your plans.”About the AuthorArshdeep KaurArsh

Pacific Fusions latest prototype packs 440 gigawatts into an 80-nanosecond burst

Pacific Fusion took the wraps off its latest pulser module prototype on Tuesday, a piece of equipment that allows the company to move ahead with its demonstration fusion power plant. Construction on the fusion power plant is expected to begin this summer. Results from the shipping container-sized prototype were good enough to unlock another tranche of Pacific Fusion’s Series A round, which exceeds $1 billion, the company exclusively told TechCrunch. The company did not disclose the size of the tranche. Pacific Fusion is among the best-funded fusion startups. The tranche-based model is more widely used in biotech, where it saves startups time on fundraising, allowing them to remain focused on hitting technical milestones. The funding arrangement has allowed the company “to keep our heads down,” Pacific Fusion CTO Keith LeChien told TechCrunch. “It means that we can lean into the future without spending 20% to 50% time constantly looking for the next piece of capital.” Pacific Fusion is pursuing a form of fusion power known as inertial confinement. Its reactor will use 156 pulser modules to deliver an enormous jolt of electricity to a small fuel target in the fusion chamber. That electrical pulse will create a magnetic field around the eraser-sized fuel pellet, squeezing it until atoms inside fuse and release enormous amounts of energy. A pacific fusion employee inspects the pulser prototype.Image Credits:Pacific Fusion The startup’s next challenge will be to scale up from the sub-scale prototype to a full-size pulser module, the core component of the demonstration power plant. The company hopes that power plant will be able to produce more electricity than the facility requires to operate, a feat no one has achieved yet. But because the race for fusion power is heating up, the company isn’t waiting for results from a full-scale pulser module before starting work on the demonstration power plant. “The shovels go in the ground for that facility this summer,” LeChien said. To date, inertial confinement is the only way humans have been able to produce a controlled fusion reaction that releases more energy than was required to start it, a milestone known as scientific breakeven. And so far, only one experiment, at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, has been able to produce and replicate those results. But where NIF relies on large, expensive lasers, Pacific Fusion is hoping it only needs thousands of less costly electrical switches and capacitors. Those capacitors and switches will be coordinated to generate enormous, precisely timed pulses of electricity — each about 100 nanoseconds long. Pacific Fusion’s challenge is ensuring the capacitors can release their energy at precisely the right moment. If they don’t, the fuel pellet won’t be hit with sufficient energy to compress quickly enough to spark a fusion reaction. The company’s demonstration device will have 156 full-size pulser modules. Each module will contain 32 circular stages, and each stage will be ringed with 10 bricks. One brick contains two capacitors to store power and one switch to release it. The prototype pulser module that the company recently tested is about a third the size of the full module. It contains nine stages and 90 bricks, and it released 440 gigawatts of peak power in just 80 nanoseconds. “It meets all our requirements for scaling up to build our big demonstration system,” LeChien said. Once Pacific Fusion has its demonstration power plant ready, it intends to skip past scientific breakeven and go straight for facility breakeven, in which its demonstration device generates enough energy to power the entire facility. “Any fusion approach, regardless of your specific technology, has to traverse through that,” LeChien said. “It’s the next tectonic milestone in fusion.” When you purchase through links in our articles, we may earn a small commission. Sabrina Carpenter gets restraining order against man who showed up at her home

12 minutes agoPaul GlynnEPA/ShutterstockUS pop star Sabrina Carpenter has been granted a temporary restraining order against a man following a series of what she called "deeply alarming" incidents at her home.In court documents seen by the BBC's US partner CBS, lawyers for Carpenter said she was seeking a full court order against William Applegate, who she alleges tried to force his way into her house in Los Angeles last month and returned twice more. The singer said the incidents had left her in "significant and ongoing fear" for her personal safety. She wrote in a signed declaration: "His pattern of stalking, trespassing, and surveillance has caused me severe and ongoing emotional distress."Carpenter, 27, is one of the world's biggest pop stars, having scored top three hits in both the US and UK with Espresso, Please Please Please, Taste and Manchild. Her legal declaration claims that the man appeared at her home uninvited on several occasions in recent weeks, tried to break in and refused to leave when confronted by her security, claiming he knew the star and that she had been expecting him. During one "deeply alarming" incident on 23 May, Carpenter claims that he made his way to her front door - after trespassing onto her neighbour's property - and tried to open it, before ringing the doorbell and refusing to leave until the police arrived to arrest him."[He] fabricated the outrageous and entirely false claim that he personally knew me and that I was expecting him. This was a complete lie," Carpenter wrote. She said he returned less than 24 hours later and loitered outside her house for hours. The next day, he allegedly returned again and parked outside her home.Carpenter said the incident in which he allegedly attempted to enter her home "is among the most disturbing violations of personal safety and privacy I have ever experienced".The Grammy winner - who submitted doorbell camera footage alongside her court filings - asked for a restraining order to protect her and two other people who live with her, her sister and her sister's boyfriend. On Friday, a judge temporarily granted the request, ordering the man to stay at least 100 yards from Carpenter, her home, her car and her workplace, as well as the other residents.A follow-up court hearing is set for 17 June. The man is due in criminal court the following day over his arrest for criminal trespassing.Detective Peter Doomanis of the Los Angeles Police Department said in his declaration, filed with Carpenter's petition, that he believes the man has "developed a disturbing and irrational fixation on petitioner". He continued: "The pattern of his conduct, which may have begun as early as approximately 20 April 2026, reflects the hallmarks of a fixated, obsessional individual."This trajectory is consistent with well-documented patterns of stalking behaviour that pose a serious and escalating risk [to] victim safety."

Pimpri-Chinchwad residents threaten to dump waste in municipal commissioners office

2 min readPuneJun 2, 2026 03:57 PM IST The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has proposed to stop collecting wet waste from large housing societies (File Photo)Several housing societies in Pimpri-Chinchwad have threatened to dump wet waste in the municipal commissioner’s office if the civic body does not withdraw its proposal to stop collecting the waste from large housing societies starting July 1. The Chikhali-Moshi-Pimpri-Chinchwad Housing Society Federation said the proposal is unilateral, impractical, and unjust to the residents.Sanjeevan Sangale, president of the federation, told The Indian Express on Tuesday that the federation submitted a complaint to Municipal Commissioner Vijay Suryavanshi, warning of an agitation if the plan is implemented without consultation or coordination. According to the federation, under the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 issued by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, housing projects with more than 100 flats must install an organic waste converter machine. It said the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) should ensure compliance with the rule before granting construction permits or occupancy certificates. The federation alleged that many large housing projects in Pimpri-Chinchwad were granted occupancy certificates despite lacking such waste processing systems. “Although we have raised this issue with the administration for several years, no concrete action has been taken,” Sangale said. Sangale said the proposed policy would place the entire burden of waste management directly on housing societies. “This decision is impractical due to a lack of space, technical difficulties, and poor prior planning. Many societies simply do not have the open space required to install waste processing systems. Therefore, this decision imposes an unfair financial and managerial burden on the societies,” he added. Sangale said the civic body should consult the housing societies’ office-bearers in the city before making such a decision. “If the municipal corporation takes a unilateral decision without consulting us and stops collecting wet waste from large societies, we will be forced to bring all that waste and dump it in the municipal commissioner’s office. For many years, we have been continuously following up with the administration regarding the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 and the responsibility of builders. However, if there is no concrete action on that front and, instead, the burden is placed on society residents, it will not be acceptable to us,” he said.

Ukraine Comes Under Major Russian Drone Strikes Near NATO Border

Russia launched a large-scale, deadly attack on Ukraine's capital city, Kyiv, early Tuesday, leaving at least 13 dead and over 100 injured across the country. The attack, according to Russia's defence ministry, was in retaliation for the ‘terrorist attacks’ committed by Kyiv.A resident stands at a site of a Russian drone and missile strike, amid Russia's attack on Ukraine, in Kyiv, Ukraine June 2, 2026.(REUTERS)Days after Russia claimed that Ukraine launched a drone attack on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant over the weekend, Moscow on Tuesday (local time) launched a large-scale, deadly attack on the Ukrainian capital city, Kyiv. The deadly attack damaged residential and commercial buildings and killed at least 13 people, CNN reported, citing authorities, who added that the strike was part of a broad offensive on targets across Ukraine.Over 100 injured across the countryThe officials noted that four people were killed in the capital city and nine in the central city of Dnipro, with over 100 wounded across the country, of whom 65 were injured in the city. The Russian strikes were reported in Dnipro, where at least 35 people were injured, and Kharkiv, where 14 were hurt, including a child. Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said that a rescue operation is underway at the site of a four-storey apartment building in Dnipro that authorities said was “effectively levelled,” as six people remain unaccounted for.Residential buildings damagedImages released from the country's State Emergency Services showed a fire engulfing a badly damaged house as firefighters tried to control the flames, while the windows and facade of what appears to be the front room of another debris-filled home were completely blown away.According to the report, Kyiv's air defences appeared less active during a ballistic missile strike around 7 AM. A strong smell of smoke hung in the air across the city on Tuesday morning. The overnight strikes also resulted in power outages and sent residents scrambling to shelters as air raid sirens sounded.According to the mayor, a suspected missile strike targeted a 24-storey residential building in Shevchenkivskyi district, causing a fire, following which a blaze broke out in a nine-storey building in Podil after debris struck the roof. Elsewhere in the city, Russian strikes damaged a clinic, and debris fell on the grounds of a kindergarten, Klitschko added. In Bucha, three homes, warehouse facilities, and non-residential buildings were damaged, Kalashnyk said.Ukrainian authorities react to overnight assaultVitali Klitschko, Kyiv's mayor, described the overnight attack as a “massive enemy attack.” He added that there are fears that people remain trapped under the debris of a multi-storey apartment block in Podilsky district that partially collapsed after a “double tap” Russian strike.Kyiv's regional governor, Mykola Kalashnyk, said, “Throughout the night, the enemy launched massive attacks on the Kyiv region using drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. Our peaceful towns and villages were once again under attack.”Russia launches overnight assault in KyivAccording to the Ukrainian military, Moscow's overnight assault involved over 656 drones and 73 missiles, including advanced hypersonics. The Ukrainian Air Force stated that the vast bulk of the drones and just over half of the missiles were shot down.Moscow fired at least eight of its advanced hypersonic Zircon missiles toward Ukraine, the air force said, noting that none were intercepted. Experts have previously told CNN that the Zircon missiles are nearly impossible to shoot down.Russia's response to the assaultReacting to the overnight assault, Moscow's Defence Ministry said its "massive strike" targeted Ukraine's defence, military, fuel, and transport facilities in several key regions in response to what it said were “terrorist acts committed by the Kyiv regime,” TASS reported.According to the state news agency, the overnight assault included “high-precision long-ran

NYT publisher warns AI companies are destroying independent journalism

3 min readJun 2, 2026 02:55 PM IST The New York Times publisher AG Sulzberger has warned that the artificial intelligence companies were threatening the future of journalism and slammed the AI giants for “brazen theft of intellectual property”. During a speech at the World News Media Congress in Marseille on Monday (June 1), Sulzberger said that the “hijacking of the public square” by the artificial intelligence companies was “made possible by the original sin that animates their A.I. products — a brazen theft of intellectual property” that he said occurred “at an unprecedented scale.” He condemned the AI companies for stealing information from news organisations and repackaging it into a free shortcut for users, starving the journalists of traffic and revenue.“Tech giants strip-mine news websites without permission or compensation. They repackage these stolen goods as their own, siphoning off the audiences and revenue that otherwise would go to the news organisations that created this work. And this happens not just once during the training process, but countless times every single day,” the NYT publisher added. ‘Too quiet, too passive and too fragmented in the face of abuses’ Sulzberger said that the news sector has been “too quiet, too passive and too fragmented in the face of abuses by the companies leading the AI revolution”, calling on other news organisations to raise their voice on the challenges the industry was facing due to the advancement of AI. The NYT was the very first major news organisation to sue OpenAI and Microsoft over the use of its copyrighted articles to build and power AI models, unleashing a wave of litigation by media organisations against AI startups. He said that the AI giants were “consolidating their outsize control over our data and our attention” but were “failing to embrace a core responsibility that comes with this power – to ensure the public has access to trustworthy news and information”. The NYT publisher further expressed grave concerns over the negative impacts of AI on the industry, stating that the world was rushing into a future where fewer reporters will be left to do the challenging work of uncovering original news.Story continues below this ad “I fear we are careening toward a future with fewer and fewer journalists to do the expensive, difficult work of original reporting — going to places, talking to people, digging up information, covering important issues and events, providing context and analysis, investigating the powerful,” Sulzberger said. “A future where a crucial wellspring of a healthy society and a stable democracy — the truth, understanding and accountability provided by original journalism — continues to dry up.” The Express Global Desk at indianexpress.com which delivers authoritative, verified, and context-driven coverage of key international developments shaping global politics, policy, and migration trends. Fire breaks out at steel plant in Chhattisgarh, no casualties

A fire broke out at the captive power plant section of a steel manufacturing unit in Chhattisgarh's Raipur district in the early hours of Tuesday (June 2, 2026), police said.No casualties were reported in the blaze that erupted at Mivaan Steel's plant under the Mandir Hasaud police station area, an official said. The blaze sent thick plumes of smoke billowing into the sky, visible from kilometres away, he said.According to preliminary information, the fire started following an oil leak from a turbine generator's control-line pipe, which quickly ignited as a steam line also passed close to the affected area, he said. While the Fire Department contained the blaze within a few hours, the police have launched a probe to ascertain the exact sequence of events and assess the extent of the property damage, the official said.
