An injured Assam Rifles personnel is being taken for treatment after a suspected IED blast near Sukhovi in Chümoukedima district, Nagaland, on July 13. | Photo Credit: - The Nagaland Police on Friday (July 17, 2026) announced a cash reward of ₹50,000 for credible information leading to the identification and arrest of those behind the July 13 bomb attack that killed an Assam Rifles havildar and critically injured four others.Chümoukedima falls under the jurisdiction of the Police Commissionerate in the adjoining Dimapur district. In a public notice, Commissioner of Police Aotula T. Imchen said a team was conducting an intensive investigation into the blast—suspected to have been caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) at Khopanullah under Chümoukedima ‘A’ village—to identify and catch all those involved in the “heinous terrorist act”.The notice said the reward would be given for information leading to the identification and arrest of the perpetrators or their associates, as well as those involved in planning, financing, harbouring, transporting or otherwise facilitating the offence. The police also appealed for information to help recover explosives, explosive components, weapons, communication devices, vehicles, or any other incriminating material linked to the case, apart from identifying hideouts, safe houses, or logistical support networks used by the offenders.A day after the incident, the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN) said it would “make every effort through all available and appropriate means” to identify those behind the IED blast that targeted an Assam Rifles convoy. The site of the blast is not far from Camp Hebron, the NSCN’s military and administrative headquarters. The suspected IED blast killed Havildar Mohammed Iqbal, who was posted with the Assam Rifles Training Centre and School at Sukhovi in Chümoukedima district. Doctor will give you injection: Expert decodes Nakuul and Jankee Mehtas take on fear parenting

“My 4-year-old son always asks for Gems,” said actor Nakuul Mehta on his podcast, The Indian Parent Pod, while discussing a dilemma familiar to many Indian parents. Along with his wife, Jankee Mehta, he reflected on how tempting it can be to use fear to stop children from demanding chocolates or throwing tantrums. “How many people have said, ‘Don’t eat chocolate, your teeth will get spoilt,’ ‘The doctor will give you an injection,’ ‘I’ll call the police’,” they said on the podcast. Acknowledging that “fear works very fast,” the couple argued that quick compliance doesn’t necessarily make it healthy. “Every time I make my child work in fear, what am I teaching them? That doctors are scary, food is scary, that adults control them with fear,” they said.Instead, they advocated for calm, consistent boundaries. “The answer is to have boundaries with consistency… We eat chocolate sometimes, not every time. And yes, there will be a meltdown.” They added that the real challenge for parents isn’t saying no—it’s managing the crying that follows. “Sometimes children do get disappointed, but disappointment is not damage… Steady parenting does not mean my child will never cry. It means I will not make fear my default parenting tool.” DISCLAIMER: This article is based on information from the public domain and/or the experts we spoke to. But is this approach backed by science? According to Dr Pavitra Shankar, Associate Consultant, Psychiatrist, Aakash Healthcare, research suggests that while fear-based discipline may stop a behaviour in the moment, it is not an effective long-term parenting strategy. Why fear-based discipline can backfire Dr Shankar explains that children who repeatedly hear phrases such as “The doctor will give you an injection” or “I’ll call the police” often comply because they are frightened—not because they understand why a behaviour is inappropriate. Over time, this can weaken trust between parent and child. Instead of viewing parents as a source of safety and guidance, children may begin associating them with intimidation. It can also create unnecessary fears of doctors, hospitals, police officers and other authority figures who are meant to help them. “Child development research consistently shows that children thrive when discipline is based on predictable rules, emotional security and respectful communication,” says Dr Shankar. When parents set calm and consistent boundaries, children gradually develop self-control and internal motivation rather than behaving simply to avoid punishment.Story continues below this ad Are tantrums normal? Nakuul and Jankee argued that parents should hold firm boundaries even if it results in tears, a point Dr Shankar says aligns with developmental psychology. She explains that authoritative parenting, which combines warmth with firm and consistent limits, is considered one of the healthiest parenting styles. Preschoolers are naturally testing boundaries because the parts of the brain responsible for impulse control and emotional regulation are still developing. “A tantrum is often not bad behaviour but an expression of frustration because children don’t yet know how to manage overwhelming emotions,” Dr Shankar says. Rather than giving in, she advises parents to stay calm and acknowledge the child’s feelings. Saying something like, “I know you’re upset because you wanted that toy,” while maintaining the limit helps children feel understood without changing the rule.Story continues below this ad Consistency is key, she adds. If boundaries constantly shift to avoid tears, children quickly learn that tantrums are an effective way to get what they want. Can fear-based parenting cause anxiety? Dr Shankar says studies have linked repeated fear-based discipline with unintended emotional consequences. Research has associated harsh, fear-inducing parenting with increased anxiety symptoms, lower self-esteem and poorer emotional regulation. However, Dr Shankar notes that an occasional warning is

A composite view of meteors streaking through the sky over Inner Mongolia, China in 2023. (Image credit: Photo by Costfoto/NurPhoto via Getty Images) Look up! The Perseid meteor shower is finally active, bringing the potential for gorgeous shooting stars and fireballs as Earth plunges into the trail of debris shed by the icy comet Swift-Tuttle. Here's what you need to know. The Perseid meteor shower 2026 is set to be a truly magnificent affair and a stark contrast to last year, when moonlight drowned out all but the brightest shooting stars. The shower will reach peak activity overnight on Aug. 12-13 under the dark skies of the new moon. During the peak, up to 100 shooting stars may be seen each hour as they cut fiery paths through the summer sky, according to the American Meteor Society. You could even spot a Perseid brightening the false twilight triggered at the climax of the Aug. 12. eclipse, as the moon perfectly hides the surface of our parent star. But for that to happen you'd have to find yourself in the path of totality just as a large fireball-producing meteoroid struck Earth's atmosphere. It's certainly possible, but let's just say that the odds aren't stacked in your favor. If you're not in the path of totality then there's no need to despair, you stand a much better chance of spotting Perseids the old fashioned way anyway! How to spot Perseid shooting starsPerseid meteors can be spotted anytime after dark from tonight onwards, streaking away from a patch of sky, or radiant, located close to the red supergiant star Eta Persei in the constellation Perseus. How to measure distances in the night sky using your outstretched hand. (Image credit: Created in Canva Pro)To find the best meteors, you'll first want to locate Perseus glistening above the northwestern horizon after dark. Next, find a patch of sky 40 degrees above it, and settle in for one of the year's premier natural light shows. This is where the shooting star trails will be at their longest. The Perseids are also famed for producing vivid green fireballs capable of briefly turning night to day as larger chunks of debris collide with Earth's atmosphere at speeds of up to 37 miles per second (59 kilometers per second). When to look for Perseid meteorsPerseid meteors may be spotted anytime from 10 p.m. onward for viewers in the U.S., though the number of visible shooting stars will be higher in the hours before dawn, when the radiant rises to its highest point in the summer night sky. Try to head away from city lights and allow at least 20 minutes for your eyes to adapt to the darkness.Relatively few shooting stars will be visible in the days following the shower's awakening compared to the peak. However, if you do catch one, you'll have seen the demise of a meteoroid that's likely been flying through space for thousands of years before reaching Earth.Nikon Z8 (Image credit: Jase Parnell-Brookes)The Nikon Z8 excels in just about every department and we rate it as the best overall camera out there. It features a full-frame 45.7MP sensor, 8K video capabilities and, of course, excellent low-light performance. Check out our Nikon Z8 review for more."The meteors we see early and late during the activity are most likely the oldest as they have obviously been perturbed from the main orbit of the comet, which we encounter in mid-August," said Robsert Lunsford of the American Meteor Society in an email to Space.com.The greatest number of meteors can be seen in the predawn hours of Aug. 13 as the shower reaches peak activity, when Earth passes through the densest section of the debris stream left behind by comet Swift-Tuttle.Want to capture your own photos of the Perseid meteor shower? Then be sure to read our guide detailing how to image shooting stars, along with our roundups of the best cameras and lenses for astrophotography.Editor's Note: Did you capture a photo of a Perseid and want to share it with Space.com's readers? VHP seeks FIR, fast track court to look into Ram Temple donation allegations

Congress General Secretary in-charge Communications Jairam Ramesh. File | Photo Credit: PTI The Congress on Friday (July 17, 2026) said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced in Parliament the setting up of the Ram temple trust whose activities have resulted in "aastha dhoka (betrayal of faith)", and demanded that he must break his silence on the issue of alleged donation theft on the floor of the House.Speaking with PTI ahead of Parliament's Monsoon Session, Congress General Secretary in-charge Communications Jairam Ramesh said the PM created the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust through an announcement in Parliament and it is only appropriate that he takes the two Houses into confidence on what has happened."On February 5, 2020, the prime minister himself got up in the Lok Sabha, one of those rare occasions when he comes to Parliament. He came to Parliament to make the announcement that his government was setting up the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust," Mr. Ramesh said. The Trust was set up by the Prime Minister and it comprises people appointed by him, Mr. Ramesh said, adding the Trust's activities, its functions, its terms of reference were given by Mr. Modi."It is this Trust that has betrayed the faith of crores of Indians. There has been 'chanda chori, aastha dhoka' by the activities of this Trust," Mr. Ramesh alleged."So the prime minister must break his silence on the floor of the House. He created this Trust through an announcement on the 5th of February 2020. It's only appropriate that he takes Parliament into confidence. What has happened? How has this 'chanda chori, aastha dhoka' taken place in the Trust that he himself took great pride in creating," the Congress leader said. The alleged embezzlement came to light last month, following which an SIT was constituted. The investigation has so far led to the arrest of eight accused, resignation of two Trust functionaries and the recovery of cash allegedly siphoned off from temple donations. The probe is continuing.A preliminary nine-page report has been submitted to the government of June 23 by the SIT probing the case, which had triggered a series of actions in the case.Former Trust general secretary Champat Rai, whose resignation was accepted amid the controversy, had said in a letter that he would break his silence only after the SIT submitted its final report. In the same letter, he also questioned how the confidential preliminary SIT report had found its way into the public domain. The probe has also come under the scrutiny of the Supreme Court. On July 13, the apex court directed the SIT to submit a status report on its investigation while issuing notice to the Trust on petitions seeking a fair and time-bound probe into the alleged donation embezzlement.A Bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant sought the status report from the SIT, which comprises Lucknow Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant, Inspector General of Police Kiran S and Special Secretary (Finance) Neel Ratan.Sources said the Special Investigation Team (SIT) may submit an interim report to the Supreme Court on Monday (July 20, 2026) in compliance with the apex court's directions. Uganda suspends school trips after 20 pupils die in bus crash

Uganda's government has suspended all school trips in the wake of Thursday evening's bus crash that killed at least 20 pupils and one adult who were taking part in an educational tour.Dozens of others, including staff, were injured in the accident in Kapchorwa district, eastern Uganda.Preliminary investigations suggest the bus had a mechanical fault before the driver lost control on Chekwatit Hill, a stretch of road that has been the site of several serious crashes, according to local officials.Uganda records thousands of road deaths a year but this incident is one of the country's deadliest involving children in recent times. "As an immediate precautionary measure, we must do something about the safety of our children," Education Minister John Chrysostom Muyingo said, announcing the temporary ban on trips until a full investigation was completed. Traffic police spokesman Michael Kananura described what had happened on Thursday. "The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road, struck a large stone along the roadside, and overturned," he said. The bus, carrying pupils from King David Junior School in Ndejje, crashed at about 20:00 local time (17:00 GMT) at Chekwatit village."Sadly, 20 children and one adult, who happens to be the founder and director, Mr Tadeo Ssekade, have gone to be with the Lord," Local Government Minister Balaam Ateenyi Barugahara posted on X, while he was at the scene. Videos shared by eyewitnesses showed the bus badly damaged, as local residents rushed to help the injured children. The pupils were returning from a study tour, with local media reporting they had visited the Sipi Falls, a tourist area. Uganda records thousands of road deaths every year, with speeding, poorly maintained vehicles and dangerous roads among the leading causes, according to traffic authorities. The latest crash comes amid renewed concern over the safety of school transport after several serious bus accidents were reported in the country in recent weeks.

Atul Kulkarni backs Sonam Wangchuk with one-day hunger strike

3 min readMumbaiJul 17, 2026 05:26 PM IST Swara Bhasker weighed in on why many in Bollywood have not openly supported Sonam Wangchuk. As Sonam Wangchuk’s indefinite hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar entered its 20th day, the education reformer continues to demand accountability over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination, broader education reforms, and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. His protest has drawn support from several actors, filmmakers, digital creators and public figures, many of whom have urged the government to initiate a dialogue while appealing to Wangchuk to end his fast in the interest of his health. Among the most vocal supporters from Bollywood has been Swara Bhasker, who also visited the protest site earlier this week. ‘They’re not coming after seeing what happened to me’: Swara Bhasker Now, in an interview with The Lallantop, Swara spoke about why many in Bollywood have stayed away from the protest, suggesting that fear of repercussions has kept several actors from speaking out. “They’re not coming after seeing what happened to me. They know that if they speak too much, what happened to Swara Bhasker could happen to them as well. That’s why they are staying away.”While refusing to judge fellow actors individually, Swara urged people not to rely on celebrities to validate public causes. “Don’t place so much faith in celebrities. A cause does not become important because a celebrity supports it. It is important in its own right.” She stressed that the protest did not need celebrity endorsement to remain significant. Swara Bhasker said she had joined the demonstration not as a celebrity, but as a citizen and a mother. “This protest is about my daughter’s future too. I don’t want to be forced to leave the country and move to Dubai on a Golden Visa. I want my daughter to grow up and study in this country and have the same opportunities that I had.” Also Read | Dhurandhar with 37 million views becomes Netflix’s most-watched non-English film Earlier this week visiting the protest site, Swara also shared messages of support on Instagram. In one post, she wrote, “Thank you for fighting for the future of all our children.” In another, she shared a photograph with Sonam Wangchuk and captioned it, “The indefatigable Sonam Wangchuk sir is fighting for your children’s future. All my solidarity and gratitude.” Aamir Khan on Sonam Wangchuk Meanwhile, Aamir Khan also weighed in on Sonam Wangchuk’s ongoing fast while speaking at the London Indian Film Festival. The actor dismissed the long-held belief that 3 Idiots was based on Wangchuk, clarifying that neither he nor the film’s writers were aware of the education reformer while making the film. He said, “No. That’s not true actually. That is a misconception. I didn’t know about Mr Sonam at the time when we were doing the film 3 Idiots.”Story continues below this ad Aamir elaborated, “Neither Raju (Hirani) and Abhijat (Joshi), who were the two writers, nor I knew about Sonam. However, what Mr Sonam is doing doesn’t have to be based on the character of 3 Idiots for us to respect him. In fact, Mr Sonam himself has said that the character is not based on him. He has also clarified.” Speaking about Sonam Wangchuk’s fast, the actor-filmmaker added, “I think all of us are very concerned for his health and life. We hope that he ends his fast.”

What to Do in LA if You’re Here for Business (2025)

General Compute, an AI inference cloud startup, has landed a $400 million loan from Upper90, a tech investment firm. It might be the first deal to put up inference-specific chips as collateral — chips built to run already-trained AI models quickly and efficiently, rather than the more expensive chips used to build the models in the first place. The financing is the latest signal that markets are responding to concerns over the price of AI tools and tokens by turning to infrastructure that runs open-source models more cheaply than the newest LLMs from frontier labs. Founded by CEO Finn Puklowski, General Compute raised a $15 million seed round in May to build an inference neocloud around silicon from SambaNova, an Intel-backed chipmaker. (Neoclouds are purpose-built for AI workloads, unlike the general-purpose infrastructure offered by traditional hyperscalers like AWS or Azure.) The company’s SN50 chips are designed for inference. They’re power-efficient and don’t require expensive water-cooling systems, which means they can be deployed more quickly than GPUs across a larger variety of data centers. General Compute says the new chips will provide 16 times faster inference than GPU-based clouds. The challenge is getting a lot of these chips, especially when you’re a brand-new company. Upper90 co-founder and CEO Billy Libby, a former Goldman Sachs quantitative trader, had a playbook for this: In 2021, his firm financed GPU purchases by Crusoe, the energy-focused data center startup, which he believes was the first loan against the value of advanced chips. Traditional lenders eschewed such deals at the time because of the risks and uncertainties around GPU depreciation. But as CoreWeave made chips-backed loans into a business model and then the basis of a blockbuster IPO, this kind of financing has become common. “When we financed Nvidia GPUs as the first group to do that, the market was inefficient,” Libby told TechCrunch. “We could really put together something as an early participant, and kind of get compensated for the risk.” Now that GPUs are comparatively well understood and perhaps over-bought, Upper90 is turning to companies like General Compute to ride the next wave of the AI boom. “We think open source models are going to be important, and we went and looked for a player last year that was in inference,” Libby said. “Everyone doesn’t need a supercomputer, but they do need inference and AI.” That thesis has been growing stronger, with companies that provide access to open models, like OpenRouter and Fireworks, raising new rounds at huge valuations. New models like Kimi’s K3, recently just this week, have proven to compete with the latest releases from Anthropic and OpenAI on coding benchmarks. And new chipmakers like Groq and Cerebras have drawn interest from acquirers and public markets alike. General Compute’s ability to access chips outside of Nvidia’s ecosystem matters for the same reason. TensorWave, another AI infrastructure company, is making a similar bet on a partnership with AMD. As more alternatives to Nvidia emerge, compute providers that aren’t locked into Nvidia deals may have an advantage in providing cost-efficient inference. “There are a bunch of chips that are starting to scale that have amazing [total cost of ownership], or that can operate much faster than Nvidia, but there’s not too many buyers for them,” Puklowski said. “By getting together with Upper90, this is not just, ‘a cool startup got some money to buy some compute.’ Like, this is the first signal of capital organizing itself and the fragmenting of Nvidia’s monopolistic dominance.” When you purchase through links in our articles, we may earn a small commission. Today's top stories President Trump delivered a primetime address last night where he repeated claims that the country's voting systems are vulnerable to being "rigged and stolen." The president presented no new evidence of a single fraudulent vote in any election. He said he was declassifying intelligence documents that reveal "shocking vulnerabilities in our election infrastructure." President Trump addresses the nation from the East Room of the White House. So far, it's unclear whether any new information has emerged that could affect the security of America's voting systems. They largely highlight existing concerns about voting equipment, such as how dated it is in certain areas. Nearly all U.S. voters use paper ballots, which have undergone audits and investigations by both Republicans and Democrats after the 2020 election. Parks says no evidence of widespread fraud was found.🎧 Courts have blocked the president's executive actions aimed at changing election administration. Trump has pressed Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship to vote, but it lacks enough Senate support. Many Republicans want to focus on issues voters prioritize, such as the cost of living, NPR's Tamara Keith says. Trump spent little time on affordability and the war in Iran in his speech. Catastrophic flooding in Texas has killed two people and prompted hundreds of rescues after days of heavy rain. The flooding comes just over a year after devastating July Fourth floods killed 130 people, including children and counselors at a summer camp. 🎧 Since last year's disaster, residents may be paying closer attention to evacuation and shelter alerts, Chelsey Zhu of NPR member station KUT says. State lawmakers have also prioritized flood safety measures, including new warning sirens and updated emergency plans for summer camps. Forecasters expect the rain to ease, allowing officials to shift from rescues to recovery. Several U.S. states are experiencing unhealthy and hazardous air quality as heavy smoke from wildfires continues to spread. Extreme heat and dry conditions in Ontario and northern Minnesota fueled wildfires earlier this week. Today, more than 800 wildfires are burning in Canada, according to the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System. Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan face some of the worst air quality levels and millions in large cities like Philadelphia, New York City and Baltimore are also impacted. Relief remains several days away. Picture show SEATTLE, WA - JUNE 14, 2026: Cure for Paranoia performs during NPR's Tiny Desk Concert Tour stop at Neumos in Seattle, Wash., on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
