(Express photo) One of the accused in the Surat bank robbery case was allegedly shot in the leg by police on Friday when he tried to escape by firing in the air in a bid to escape, officers said. The alleged incident took place on the outskirts of Kanyasi village where the Surat City Crime Branch took one of the accused Shubham Thakur to locate the weapons used in the April 27 heist at the State Bank of India (SBI) branch on Varachha road in Surat. Surat City Commissioner of Police Anupamsinh Gahlaut told The Indian Express that the police officials had fired in retaliation after Thakur allegedly fired a round from the weapon used in the crime, during the process of panchnama of recovery. “The accused was taken for the recovery of his weapon, which was buried in a field… During the exercise of the panchnama of recovery of his particular weapon used in the dacoity, the accused fired one round in the air and attempted to escape. A police officer fired in retaliation…,” Gahlaut told The Indian Express. A joint team from the Crime Branch and Varachha Police station escorted Thakur to a secluded spot to locate alleged weapons used in the heist and Thakur opened fire with the concealed weapon, police said. According to sources, Assistant Commissioner of Police K I Modi allegedly fired a single round which hit Thakur in the leg. CCTV footage showed the presence of five accused persons. The perpetrators had snatched the mobile phones of the bank customers and employees to prevent them from alerting the police in a timely manner, and they also allegedly disabled the alarm system. Police have claimed that a gangster in Bihar’s Beur jail identified as Kundan Bhagat plotted the heist in the hope of stealing gold, but got unlucky as the keys to the vault were with the manager, who was away on duty for the Gujarat local body polls. According to police, the SBI branch in Varachha ranks second in the city in approving gold loans, which the robbers seemed to be aware of. The police said the robbers had bought a second-hand motorbike from Telangana with a fake licence plate and rode to Surat and stayed there for two months, taking houses on rent using fake Aadhaar cards which they made in Madhya Pradesh. (Image generated using AI)A 63-year-old passenger from Kerala has been booked for allegedly sexually harassing a 24-year-old cabin crew member on board a flight from Bahrain to Bengaluru. The accused has been booked under Section 75(2) (sexual harassment) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The Kempegowda International Airport Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against him based on a complaint filed by the woman after the flight landed in Bengaluru.According to the FIR, the incident took place around 8.15 pm on May 4. The complainant alleged that the accused touched her inappropriately while she was performing her duties. She further stated that the accused moved his hand towards her from under a blanket and touched her waist. She said in the complaint that she objected and warned him. The matter was also brought to the attention of the flight’s captain, who reportedly questioned the passenger. When questioned, the accused allegedly denied any wrongdoing and claimed that the contact was “friendly”, as per the FIR. The police have initiated an investigation and have yet to reveal whether the accused has been questioned or arrested.

(File photo)A magistrate court on Wednesday rejected the discharge plea of an accused booked in 2022, with five others, for allegedly creating an app for uploading photos of Muslim women with objectionable comments, including talk of their “auction”. The court noted that they had outraged the modesty of the women.The Bandra magistrate court rejected the plea filed by Mayank Rawat, who had said that there was no evidence to proceed against him. “It is alleged by the prosecution that, the present accused and other accused have downloaded the photographs of the Muslim women from their social media account. They have posted their photographs at ‘Bulli Bai’ App to sell out for illicit purpose….they have outraged the modesty of said Muslim women. In support of said application, the relevant documents are filed. The alleged photographs and messages posted on said App is also filed along with charge-sheet. Considering these materials, I do not find that, the charges against the accused are groundless. Rather, the material available on record is sufficient to frame the charge against the accused,” Judicial Magistrate Girish Mane said. A chargesheet was filed in March 2022 against six persons after a complaint was received from a woman on January 1, 2022, on finding her photograph along with those of other Muslim women on a website with objectionable comments alongside including talk of their “auction”. The chargesheet had claimed that the accused had multiple accounts on Twitter, Instagram, protonmail, YouTube and Gmail and operated these through anonymous identities. The cyber cell unit of the Bandra Kurla Complex had filed a complaint under sections including 153 (a) promoting enmity between two groups, 295 (a) (deliberate acts to outrage religious feelings), 354 (d) (stalking), 500 (defamation), 509 (insulting modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant section of the Information Technology Act. © The Indian Express Pvt Ltd Tags: Mumbai
