The AIADMK, which had expected to capture power after a spell of five years in the Opposition, has to blame itself for its present plight. As of 9.30 p.m. on Monday, the Dravidian major has won in 42 constituencies and is ahead in five others. In terms of arithmetic strength, the party was not as strong as its traditional adversary, the DMK. Moreover, despite the loss of its base being evident during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the AIADMK, which had faced the Assembly elections in the company of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), did not rope in all other anti-DMK forces under its fold.
