Over the last three years, the Navy has been working to indigenise gas turbine parts and the compressor to reduce dependence on imports of spare parts for their maintenance. (PTI file photo)The Ministry of Defence on Friday signed a contract with Bharat Forge Limited for the acquisition of 12 sets of 1.25 MW gas turbine generators at a cost of around Rs 425 crore for onboard power generation on Kolkata-class ships of the Indian Navy. The marine gas turbine generators will have at least 60% indigenous content, and the contract will be executed over a period of five years. The development is significant since the contract marks a major progress towards manufacturing indigenous marine gas turbine generators for Indian ships. So far, Indian warships have been fitted with marine gas turbine generators imported from Russia since the 1980s. Every warship has a combination of two to four marine gas turbine generators and marine diesel generators for power generation. However, over the last three years, the Navy has been working to indigenise gas turbine parts and the compressor to reduce dependence on imports of spare parts for their maintenance and has been in talks with Indian firms. Work has been on to indigenise marine gas turbine generators by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Bharat Forge Limited. In a statement issued Friday, the Defence Ministry said the procurement would enhance maritime self-reliance in critical strategic technologies and bolster the Indian Navy’s operational readiness through indigenous production and end-to-end life-cycle support.
“The contract marks a significant step towards establishing indigenous capability to manufacture marine gas turbine generators,” it noted, adding that the generator serves as a backbone of modern Naval combatants for power generation applications that power critical combat systems and advanced weapons and sensors. Separately, in a statement, Pune-based Bharat Forge Limited (BFL) said the 1.25 MW gas turbine generators will replace the lower-capacity units currently in service on board. “Awarded under the Buy (Indian) category of the Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020 (DAP-2020), the contract marks BFL’s entry into the marine gas turbine (GT) business — and will deliver the first indigenous GT-based power plant to operate aboard Indian Naval ships,” it added.Story continues below this ad The statement noted that BFL will establish a dedicated integration and test facility for gas turbine generators, adding that it will also participate in design and development programmes for larger power plants and propulsion gas turbines. It added that these manufacturing capabilities will also serve the significant needs of the Indian armed forces in general with local production and ensure complete sovereignty on maintenance and overhaul operations of gas turbines and gas turbine generators.

So far, around 51 lakh citizens across Maharashtra have registered for the NCMC. (File Photo)Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik on Thursday announced that passengers eligible for travel concessions on Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses will be required to carry the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) mandatorily from August 1 to avail benefits under various government schemes. The move is aimed at digitising the state’s concessional travel system and curbing its misuse, replacing paper-based processes with cashless ticketing and automated record-keeping.About NCMC The NCMC will serve as the single mandatory instrument for passengers seeking concessional fares on MSRTC buses. Speaking about the initiative, Sarnaik, who is also the MSRTC chairman, said, “The NCMC system is being implemented to ensure that women, senior citizens and Amrit senior citizens receive government travel concessions smoothly and transparently. The initiative will modernise ticketing operations, eliminate issues like shortage of change, improve accountability and help build a more efficient public transport system. We appeal to all eligible passengers to obtain and activate their cards before August 1 so that they can continue availing concession benefits without interruption.” Schemes covered The NCMC will apply to several existing schemes: 50 per cent discount for women under Mahila Samman Scheme, 50 per cent discount for passengers aged 65-75, free travel for senior citizens above 75 under Amrut Senior Citizen Scheme, monthly passes at 66.67 per cent discount for school students, and free passes for girl students up to Class 12 under Punyashlok Ahilyabai Holkar Scheme. Registration and card distribution So far, around 51 lakh citizens across Maharashtra have registered for the NCMC. Of these, over 1.70 lakh cards have been processed in the Pune division alone up to May 2026. Across the state, nearly 25 lakh cards have already been activated. To facilitate registration and card issuance, more than 4,000 NCMC distribution centres have been set up across Maharashtra. In the Pune division, 91 agents have been appointed specifically for this purpose. Cards can be obtained from ST bus depots and authorised agents.Story continues below this ad Documents required The card issued will be linked to the official identity relevant to each category of beneficiary. Students will receive cards mapped to their Saral numbers, while senior citizens and women will be issued Aadhaar-linked cards. Persons with disabilities will receive cards linked to their UDID numbers. Freedom fighters, journalists, and state awardees can obtain their cards from the respective divisional headquarters. A new smart card costs Rs 199. Passengers who submit their old smart card can obtain the new one for a reduced fee of Rs 149. Cards will be issued within 30 days of registration. Concessional tickets will be issued through the card’s wallet, which can be topped up using cash or UPI. Passengers who do not carry the card will be charged the full fare.Story continues below this ad Action against overcharging Sarnaik warned any distribution centre found collecting excess charges from beneficiaries will have its licence cancelled immediately, and further action will be initiated. He urged citizens to report such instances to the authorities. Tackling tech issues With a surge in applications ahead of the August 1 deadline, some card seekers have reported long waiting times and server glitches at distribution centres in Pune. Responding to this, Arun Siya, Divisional Controller, Pune, told The Indian Express that a token system has been introduced to manage the rush. “In cases of a server glitch, there is a delay in registering documents required for new cards. We report such issues to the higher authority and attempt to resolve them as soon as possible,” he said.

Bharat Bhagya Vidhata trailer: The makers of Kangana Ranaut’s Bharat Bhagya Vidhata have unveiled the film’s trailer, offering a glimpse into the extraordinary courage displayed by hospital workers during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. The promo highlights the tense events that unfolded inside Cama and Albless Hospital as staff members risked their own lives to protect hundreds of patients. What does the Bharat Bhagya Vidhata trailer show? The trailer of Bharat Bhagya Vidhata begins by showing the hectic and often thankless lives of the staff at Mumbai’s Cama Hospital. Along with handling patients, they also deal with family expectations and a lack of appreciation for their work. Kangana Ranaut’s character sums up their frustration when she says, “When your own family doesn’t respect you, what can you expect from outsiders?” Their everyday struggles take a dramatic turn when news arrives of a terrorist attack at the nearby CSMT station, and injured and frightened people start pouring into the hospital. As the situation worsens, hospital officials try to follow rules and procedures, but Kangana’s character questions whether such protocols matter during a terror attack. With the hospital full of newborn babies, pregnant women and vulnerable patients, the staff decide to stay back despite the danger. When the attackers enter the hospital and the power goes out, the nurses are forced to protect patients, move the injured and keep critical services running in the dark. The trailer turns into an intense survival drama, highlighting the courage and determination of healthcare workers caught in an unimaginable crisis. Bharat Bhagya Vidhata to clash with Main Vaapas Aaunga The makers had previously unveiled Bharat Bhagya Vidhata’s first poster while announcing its June 12 release date. However, the film will face stiff competition at the box office, with several Hindi films also scheduled to hit theatres on the same day. These include Imtiaz Ali’s Main Vaapas Aaunga, Manoj Bajpayee-starrer Governor: The Silent Saviour, and Vikram Bhatt’s Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past. About Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata Inspired by true events, Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata tells the story of hospital workers who safeguarded nearly 400 patients during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks at Cama and Albless Hospital. Speaking about the film, Kangana Ranaut told Variety India, “We often celebrate loud heroism, but real courage is quieter – it shows up, stays back, and takes responsibility. ‘Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata’ is an untold story of courage, sacrifice, humanity, and unity – of ordinary people who stood between terror and life itself. This is desh bhakti (patriotism) in its purest form, where duty becomes action. I’m honored to be part of a story that salutes those who held the city together in its toughest moments, and I can’t wait for audiences to witness it on the big screen on 12th June.” Besides Kangana Ranaut, Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata also features Girija Oak, Smita Tambe, Amruta Namdev and Esha Dey in key roles. The film has been directed by Manoj Taparia and co-produced by Kangana Ranaut’s Manikarnika Films, PEN Studios and Paramhans Creations. It is set to hit the theatres on June 12.

West Bengal elected a new government under the leadership of the current chief minister, Suvendhu Adhikari, who announced the implementation of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) by the central government. A new policy expansion has turned health security into a universal right for India’s eldest generation. (Source: File photo)West Bengal recently elected a new government under Chief Minister Suvendhu Adhikari, who announced the implementation of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) by the Central government. A new policy expansion has turned health security into a universal right for India’s eldest generation.
What is Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY)?Under the updated guidelines, every senior citizen aged 70 and above is now eligible for Rs 5 lakh in annual, cashless health insurance, a safety net that covers the high costs of secondary and tertiary hospitalisation. Whether a senior comes from a struggling household or a wealthy background, the policy recognises that health crises at 70+ are a universal challenge, ensuring no family has to drain their life savings to provide quality medical care for their elders. The scheme was first implemented from September 23, 2018, to January 10, 2019. However, it was later withdrawn. Now, the PMJAY scheme has been re-implemented, and people can avail its benefits. Included in AB-PMJAY This scheme coverage spans initial medical consultations, diagnostic laboratory investigations, and necessary medications. It includes both intensive and non-intensive care, surgical implants, and room benefits. Additionally, it offsets expenses for three days pre-hospitalisation and fifteen days of post-hospitalisation follow-up care. Excluded from AB-PMJAY Excluded from standard coverage are outpatient department expenses, cosmetic surgeries, and drug rehabilitation programmes. Furthermore, fertility treatments and individual diagnostics are generally not reimbursed, as these are considered elective or specialised services. Eligibility Criteria:Story continues below this ad Senior citizens above the age of 70 are eligible under this scheme; the income level of the individuals and their current health insurance are not taken into consideration yet.
It also includes senior citizens from urban and rural areas. Individuals under private health insurance plans or covered by the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) scheme are also eligible for the scheme. The Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), or Ayushman CAPF can continue with the current government health insurance scheme or shift to AB PM-JAY. Urban eligibility encompasses marginalised groups, including ragpickers, street vendors, labourers, and assistants. Rural criteria prioritise families in kutcha houses, households without able-bodied adults or those headed by females/disabled members, and landless labourers. These designations aim to identify and support socially and economically vulnerable individuals across both environments. Documents to carry for verificationStory continues below this ad
