Anitha stresses need to protect youth from drug menace, pats police for 'zero ganja cultivation’

Anitha on Thursday emphasised the urgent need to protect youth from the menace of drug addiction.Addressing students, faculty members, police officials and others at an awareness programme on drug abuse prevention and youth empowerment, organised by the Elite Anti-Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement (EAGLE) at VIT-AP University, marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, she said drug abuse was not merely a social issue but a serious threat to the nation’s future, as it destroys the talent, health and aspirations of young people.193 reports received through QR codes on drug abuse, says Udupi SPHighlighting the Andhra Pradesh government’s anti-narcotics initiatives, Ms. Anitha lauded the State’s achievement of attaining “zero ganja cultivation.” She commended the Andhra Pradesh Police, particularly EAGLE teams, for their sustained efforts in eliminating illegal cannabis cultivation and dismantling drug trafficking networks.Referring to the global rise of drug abuse since the 1980s, the Minister noted that both conventional and organised criminal networks continue to target youth, posing risks not only to individual lives but also to national security and development. She described the eradication of illegal ganja cultivation across nearly 25,000 acres in Agency areas and the Andhra-Odisha Border (AOB) region, where the crop had been cultivated for over three to four decades, as a historic achievement made possible through the dedication of the police force and EAGLE teams.Anti-drug awareness programme held in ErodeEAGLE Chief Ake Ravi Krishna said the State’s success in achieving zero ganja cultivation was the result of sustained enforcement, intelligence-led operations and public participation. He said EAGLE’s mission extends beyond law enforcement to safeguarding youth, raising public awareness and protecting future generations from the dangers of narcotics.Guntur District Superintendent of Police Vakul Jindal stressed the importance of collective action involving educational institutions, parents, students and society at large in combating drug abuse. Krishna Rao, the accident occurred at around 3.30 a.m. within the limits of the Macherla Town police station.The police said a lorry had suffered a tyre burst during the night and was parked on the left side of the road. The driver reportedly switched on the vehicle’s parking lights and placed sticks and leaves behind it as warning indicators before leaving for the town to seek help.The SUV, which was travelling from Hyderabad in Telangana to Pamuru in Markapur district in Andhra Pradesh, collided with the rear of the parked lorry. Thirteen members of a family from Veligandla mandal in Markapur district were travelling in the vehicle at the time of the accident.Two men and two women died in the accident, and six others sustained injuries and were shifted to the Government Hospital in Macherla for treatment. Two youth were killed as the motorcycle they were riding rammed a post near the Athani traffic signal junction at Nedumbassery in Ernakulam district in Kerala on Wednesday morning (June 24, 2026).The deceased were identified as Gokul and Ashwin, both in their early 20s and natives of Irinjalakuda, Thrissur. They were employed at a fabrication unit at Karimalloor in Aluva.They met with the fatal accident while returning after celebrating Gokul’s birthday, sources with the Nedumbassery police said. The accident happened around 7.30 a.m. as Gokul, who was riding the bike, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a post adjacent to a median while trying to overtake a vehicle.Both of them suffered head injuries and were declared brought dead by doctors at the Aluva Taluk Hospital.
