Even though brent crude, the international oil benchmark, witnessed significant fluctuation over the past few days due to geopolitical tensions, fuel prices remained unchanged in India.Brent crude prices eased on Friday after the US and Iran resumed talks and markets tracked developments of West Asia war. Brent fell 0.41% to settle at $75.99per barrel. Investors continue to eye oil prices and the potential for ensuing inflation following an escalation in attacks that strained their ceasefire and deterred tanker traffic through the critical Strait of Hormuz chokepoint.After both sides exchanged tit-for-tat strikes over the last few days, traffic in the Persian Gulf thinned and appeared to grind to a near halt on Thursday, according to ship-tracking data. On Sunday, Iran attacked a vessel which it claimed was taking an unauthorised route and announced the closure of the Strait “until further notice”. In response US launched retaliatory strikes, undermining the frugal ceasefire.Iran calls latest strike ‘warning shots’According to Iran's Revolutionary Guards, strike on the vessel were “warning shots” as it ignored repeated instructions to use an approved shipping corridor, Iran's state news agency IRNA reported. “Following this incident... the Strait of Hormuz will be closed until further notice and until the end of American interventions in this region and no vessels will be allowed to pass through,” Reuters quoted IRGC's statement.US Central Command (CENTCOM) said alleged that Tehran "blatantly attacked" a Cyprus-flagged container ship transiting the Gulf Strait. In the incident, a crew member went missing and the vessel was disabled due to fire and damage to its engine room.Confirming that US carried out third round of strikes this week, CENTCOM said on X, “In response, the United States is imposing a heavy cost by continuing to degrade Iran's ability to attack civilian mariners and commercial ships freely transiting the strait." Over Washington's recent strikes, US defense secretary Pete Hegseth said, “Iran made a poor choice. Now they pay.”While Tehran wants to regulate shipping through the Strait, Washington demands unrestricted navigation through the waterway that controls a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas trade. The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has strongly condemned the assault on doctors, nurses and healthcare workers at KDMC Shastrinagar Hospital in Maharashtra, urging the state government to take decisive action within 24 hours.The assault on hospital staff at Shastrinagar Hospital in Dombivli left two doctors, two nurses and two women employees injured.(FIMA)The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has strongly condemned the alleged assault on doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers at the civic-run Shastrinagar Hospital in Maharashtra, calling for strict action against those responsible.Dr Rohan Krishnan, FAIMA's chief patron, described the incident at the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) hospital as "deeply unfortunate" and said doctors across the country continue to work under constant fear, ANI reported.He said rising incidents of violence, harassment and mental stress have also contributed to increasing cases of depression and suicide among doctors, adding that no country can expect its healthcare workforce to serve selflessly while remaining vulnerable to physical attacks and humiliation.According to ANI, Dr Krishnan said doctors cannot be held responsible for systemic shortcomings such as the absence of NICU beds, inadequate infrastructure or administrative limitations. Resorting to violence against healthcare workers, he said, is completely unacceptable and must invite the strictest legal action.FAIMA seeks swift government actionCalling the incident an attack on the healthcare system itself, FAIMA warned that unless strict and exemplary action is taken, such assaults will continue to demoralise the medical fraternity and ultimately affect patient care across the country.The organisation urged the Maharashtra government to take decisive action within 24 hours and send a clear message that violence against doctors and healthcare workers will not be tolerated under any circumstances, ANI reported.The statement comes days after an alleged assault at Shastrinagar Hospital in Dombivli left two doctors, two nurses and two women employees injured, sparking outrage within the medical community.According to hospital officials, the incident began after doctors advised a family to transfer a newborn to another hospital because Shastrinagar Hospital lacks a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).The family allegedly contacted local Shiv Sena (Shinde) corporator Ramesh Mhatre, who arrived at the hospital with supporters after his calls to hospital authorities reportedly went unanswered. He allegedly forced his way into the premises before verbally abusing and physically assaulting staff members.The alleged assault was captured on the hospital's CCTV cameras, and the footage has been included in the ongoing investigation.Following the alleged assault, doctors and nurses at Shastrinagar and Rukminibai hospitals launched an indefinite boycott of routine services, disrupting outpatient departments while emergency care continued to function. The Kalyan and Dombivli branches of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) have also demanded strict legal action against those involved. Although global crude oil prices have fallen to a four-month low, but state run Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are unlikely to cut domestic fuel prices anytime soon. According to Union petroleum and natural gas minister Hardeep Singh Puri, domestic retail refiners are still processing costlier crude purchased during the peak of the West Asia crisis.On Wednesday, OMCs cut ATF prices by about ₹5 per litre and slashed commercial 19-kg LPG rates by ₹183.50 per cylinder as a part of its monthly revision, marking the first reduction in nearly 4 months. At the same time, the 5-kg marked-priced or Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinder rate also plunged by ₹13 to ₹808.50 per 5-kg cylinder. Nayara Energy, India's largest private retailer, also announced rate cut in petrol and diesel prices. With this price adjustment, the Rosneft-backed company became the first retailer in more than two years to reduce pump rates.The last revision in petrol and diesel prices was made in the second half of May when rates were increased by about ₹7.50 per litre each. During the period of volatility in oil prices due to geopolitical tensions, fuel retailers absorbed a significant portion of the higher crude prices and incurred cumulative losses of ₹74,781 crore on the sale of petrol, diesel and subsidised cooking gas (LPG).OMCs, including Indian Oil Corp (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) are still recovering from processing higher-cost crude purchased during the conflict.Responding to queries on whether fuel prices would be cut, Puri said, “If the question is, when will you break prices down? Well, they (OMCs) are still carrying the stock which was bought at a higher price with higher insurance, higher freight rates. As crude exports return to pre-war levels, the global benchmark has been in contango, signaling oversupply.
