In the 2026 World Cup, Kylian Mbappe has emerged as the top scorer with 10 goals and 4 assists. Lionel Messi follows with 8 goals and has one final chance to challenge. Golden Boot remains elusive for Messi: Can he still win it in World Cup 2026 or lose to Mbappe’s historic tally? (Photo by ELSA / GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA / Getty Images via AFP)(Elsa/Getty Images/AFP)Kylian Mbappe outright leads the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot race. In the France vs England 3rd position match, the 27-year-old scored 10 goals for France this tournament. In the FIFA World Cup 2026, he also has 4 assists.Lionel Messi sits second with 8 goals for Argentina, also with 4 assists. Jude Bellingham (1 assist) and Erling Haaland (0 assist) follow with 7 goals each. Ousmane Dembele rounds out the top five with 6 goals and 1 assist.Messi still has Argentina's final against Spain remaining. That match offers his last chance to close the gap.Mbappe's 10th goal came in the third-place playoff. France lost that match 4-6 against England. The goal lifted his career World Cup tally to 22. This surpassed Messi's previous record of 21 career goals.Mbappe officially became football's most prolific World Cup scorer. His efficiency has been remarkable throughout his career. He reached 22 goals in just 22 World Cup appearances. Messi, by contrast, needed 31 matches to reach 21.Mbappe's 10 goals also ended a lengthy historical drought. He became the first player with 10+ goals in one tournament since 1970. West Germany's Gerd Muller previously held that rare achievement.Mbappe also broke the record for non-penalty World Cup goals. His strike moved him to 19 non-penalty goals overall. That surpassed Messi's previous record of 17 such goals.Beyond scoring, Mbappe has contributed heavily through assists, too. He has provided 4 assists alongside his 10 goals. This gives him 14 total goal contributions this tournament. That figure is the highest single-edition total in 60 years. No other player has matched this combined scoring output recently.Mbappé now stands on the verge of further history. Should Messi fail to overtake him in the final, Mbappe wins another Golden Boot. He would become the first player ever to win it twice. His first Golden Boot came during the 2022 tournament.Recent Golden Boot winners include Kylian Mbappe himself in 2022. Harry Kane won it in 2018 with 6 goals. James Rodriguez claimed it in 2014, also with 6 goals. Can Messi still win Golden Boot? The Golden Boot goes to the tournament's top scorer. If players tie in goals, assists decide the winner. FIFA's Technical Study Group determines the assist count. If assists are also tied, minutes played become decisive. The player with fewer minutes on the pitch ranks higher.Kylian Mbappe has played 769 minutes across 8 matches so far. Lionel Messi has played 712 minutes across 7 matches instead. France's campaign has ended, so Mbappe's total is fixed.Messi's minutes will rise during the final against Spain. Fewer minutes played decides ties in goals and assists. Mbappe currently leads Messi by 57 minutes overall. If Messi scores 2 goals to level Mbappe, tricky timing applies. The GOAT would only win via minutes if substituted before 56 minutes. Should Messi play a full final (he definitely will), he'll exceed Mbappe's total minutes.Leo needs outright numerical superiority to win the Golden Boot. That means he needs either a hat-trick or two goals plus an assist to get the award. It seems unlikely in a high-pressure match like the final. But, he is Messi. So, you never know.Messi, with all the trophies in the world, has never won the Golden Boot. He, however, has 2 Golden Balls, which he won in 2014 and 2022.About the AuthorSounak MukhopadhyaySounak Mukhopadhyay covers trending news, sports and entertainment for LiveMint. The India-US framework aims to secure mining, processing, and scrapping of critical minerals and rare earths.India is also a member of the Mineral Security Partnership, a US-led coalition of 14 nations and the European Union to bolster critical mineral supply chains globally by roping in public and private sector investments. This coalition, which India joined in 2023, focuses on diversifying sources of critical minerals.Critical mineral security assumes significance as nations try to leverage their resources amid geopolitical uncertainties and trade wars. The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), in its Sustainable Development Goals Pulse July 2025 report, noted that minerals required for the energy transition—copper, zinc, germanium, tin, and nickel, among others—faced higher export restrictions compared to other traded critical minerals.About the AuthorRituraj BaruahRituraj Baruah is a special correspondent covering energy, housing, urban affairs, heavy industries and small businesses at Mint. In the latest video, he analysed the morning habits of footballer Erling Haaland.Saladino praised Haaland's consumption of raw honey and raw milk. He called raw milk "super healthy for humans" without hesitation. He cited studies linking it to fewer respiratory infections. He also mentioned lower rates of asthma and eczema. Allergies, he claimed, were similarly reduced among raw milk drinkers. He jokingly referred to Haaland as "kind of the Viking".On vitamin K2, Saladino offered an interesting childhood theory. He suggested Haaland likely consumed plenty of “good food” growing up.This nutrient, he claims, may keep growth plates open longer. He speculated this could contribute to greater adult height. He wished he'd had more K2 himself as a child. Regarding coffee, Saladino hoped Haaland's brew was free of mould.Saladino strongly endorsed Haaland's habit of morning walks. He praised Norway's World Cup 2026 hero for experimenting with various healthy lifestyle choices.Morning sunlight exposure earned particularly enthusiastic support from Saladino. He says he personally practises this every single morning. He cited research linking nighttime light exposure to poor health outcomes. His advice was to get sunlight during daytime hours. Meanwhile, he recommended keeping nights dark to protect circadian rhythms. This report is based on user-generated content from social media. LiveMint has not independently verified the claims and does not endorse them.On sourdough bread, Saladino offered cautious approval. According to him, it's the better bread choice overall. Fermentation, he explained, could reduce the risk of digestive problems.Regarding eggs, he was fully supportive without reservation. He highlighted their rich content of choline and fat-soluble vitamins. He also urged people not to fear dietary cholesterol.Saladino did criticise one aspect of Haaland's routine, though. He disapproved of the non-stick frying pan used. He warned against cookware containing PFAS chemicals generally. Instead, he recommended stainless steel options like All-Clad. He also suggested enamel-coated cast iron, such as Le Creuset. He called Haaland's a ‘garbage pan’.Summarising his overall assessment, Saladino rated the breakfast highly. He gave Haaland's morning meal a solid 7 out of 10.The meal included sunny-side-up eggs and sourdough bread. It also featured coffee mixed with raw milk. Saladino admitted he'd personally skip the coffee and bread. Still, he called it a genuinely good way to start mornings.Erling Haaland is known for his massive, protein-heavy diet. Tomahawk steak remains one of his favourite cuts. He prefers fatty, marbled steaks like ribeye and tomahawk. He buys them fresh from Greenoaks Farm in Cheshire.Haaland usually marinates and grills the beef himself. He eats it directly with his hands afterwards. In the video, he jokes about not hoarding all the tomahawks. He also jokes about wanting the steak for free.Paul Saladino praised the farm and its grass-fed beef. He called the farm's owner "a hero" for her produce. Saladino strongly endorses fatty steaks, especially ribeye and tomahawk. He also named short ribs among his personal favourites. He insists animal fat is genuinely healthy for humans. He highlighted fat-soluble vitamins such as A, K2, and E. Vitamin K2, he claimed, may lower the risk of cardiovascular mortality.Social Media ReactionPaul Saladino’s claims, however, received mixed reactions on social media.“Why did you say ‘raw milk’ but leave out how he actually mixes it with a bunch of kale and spinach? Oh, that's right. You are a massive cherry-picker,” wrote one user.“There is absolutely zero evidence that giving extra K2 beyond what's needed makes a kid grow taller than their genetic potential,” commented another. One user commented, “It’s entirely genetics, you clow
