(Photo: AFI) Sarvesh Anil Kushare, 31, a father of a two-year-old daughter, has become the first Indian high jumper to finish in the top three on his Diamond League debut. At Monaco on Friday night, he was even provisionally joint first for a while, before finishing third with 2.26 metres. Kushare beat stars like Tokyo Olympic champions Gianmarco Tamberi and Mutaz Barshim. This year’s world leader, Oleh Doroshchuk of Ukraine (2.32m), finished first, while Britain’s Jack Kimani (2.30m) was second.Kushare, who held his nerve in a high-pressure competition, joined an elite list of Indian athletes who have finished in the top three at a Diamond League meet — javelin star Neeraj Chopra, long jumper Sreeshankar Murali and discus thrower Vikas Gowda. Kushare’s journey from Devargaon village in Nashik, where he started with makeshift landing pits made of corn husks and sacks, to the world stage is a story in itself. Speaking to The Indian Express from Devargaon, Kushare’s father, Anil, said his WhatsApp has been flooded with videos of his son’s jump. “Everybody in the village is putting his jump videos as their WhatsApp status. When he started high jump, I thought he would just improve our family’s fortune. But he has affected the entire village because children have started taking up high jump,” said the proud father. Kushare has hit peak form in his early 30s, breaking the eight-year-old national record last month with a jump of 2.31 metres at the Inter-State athletics championships in Bhubaneswar. He is now the oldest active Indian athlete to hold a national record. Praising Kushare, Tejaswin Shankar, the previous record holder and star decathlete, had said in a post on X: “With this mark achieved, it is a mental barrier broken and the 2.34m or 2.35m mark is not far now.” At the World Championships last year, Kushare became the first Indian high jumper to enter the final; he eventually finished at sixth place.Story continues below this ad Kushare’s previous coach, Raosaheb Jadhav, talks about the high jump revolution the athlete has inspired in Devargaon village. “Today, I am training more than 30 children. I retired four years back as a physical education teacher, but the children won’t stop coming to me. After Kushare started winning national medals nearly a decade ago, the first batch of 12 boys picked up the sport. All of them changed the fortunes of their families by securing a job,” Jadhav, who spotted Kushare, said. When Kushare was going for the national record mark last month, his current coach Jithin Thomas had only one thing to say: “If you cross 2.30m today, your name will be remembered for as long as high jump is in this country.” Kushare, too, had expressed confidence after breaking the record. “Now that the psychological barrier of 2.30m mark is gone, I believe I can do a lot better,” he had said. On Friday, when Kushare was jumping in Monaco, Thomas watched with anxiety, about 1,700 kilometres away in Spala, Poland, where Indian athletes are at a training camp for the Commonwealth Games. “I had asked him to make history once, but this boy keeps on making a name for himself,” he said. “It is a big moment for the Indian high jump scene. Before this, no Indian high jumper had participated in a Diamond League. Sarvesh showed that Indian jumpers are made for big leagues,” Thomas, who is a former high jumper and Asian Championships medallist, said.

(Express Photo by Rohit Jain Paras/ representative) Delhi University has received over 1.9 lakh applications for undergraduate admissions for the 2026-27 academic session, with more than 1.64 lakh candidates having also completed the preference-filling stage, officials said on Friday. The university said 1,90,645 candidates have registered for the UG admission process through the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS). Officials added that 1,64,098 candidates have completed Phase two of the admission process, which involves filling in programme and college preferences. Candidates have until 11.59 pm on Saturday, July 11, to complete this process.Correction window open till Saturday The university has also opened a one-time correction window from 10 am on Friday, allowing applicants to fix errors in the details they had already submitted on the CSAS portal. This correction facility, too, will remain open till 11: 59 pm on Saturday. Officials said the correction window was opened after the university received requests from students who had reported mistakes while entering their details on the portal. Registration for undergraduate admissions began on June 26 and will close at 11: 59 pm on Saturday. Phase two, during which candidates are required to complete subject mapping and enter their programme and college preferences, opened on July 3. At a webinar held earlier in the week to guide applicants through the process, university officials had urged students to complete subject mapping and preference filling carefully before the deadline. Courses on offer Admissions are being held for 73 undergraduate programmes spread across 69 colleges and departments, offering a total of 71,624 seats. Around 150 BA programme combinations are on offer, and the detailed seat matrix has already been uploaded on the university website, officials said.Story continues below this ad Candidates have been advised to review their programme and college preferences carefully before the deadline, after which the choices will be locked automatically, officials added. Admissions under supernumerary categories, including sports and extracurricular activities, will also be processed based on candidates’ preferences. First allocation list on July 16 The first seat allocation list will be released on July 16. Once a candidate accepts an allotted seat and pays the admission fee, they can either freeze the admission or opt for an upgrade in subsequent rounds. Those opting for an upgrade will be allowed to reorder their higher preferences before the next round of allocation. The university has also introduced a virtual wallet mechanism for fee payment. Officials said candidates who are later upgraded to another programme or college, after having paid the admission fee in the first round, will have the amount automatically adjusted, doing away with the need for repeated payments. The university aims to complete two rounds of admissions before the academic session begins on July 28.Story continues below this ad Separately, the university said the third allocation list for two-year postgraduate programmes — including performance-based courses such as MFA, B.P.Ed, M.P.Ed and Music — was released on July 10. A total of 1,765 fresh allocations have been made, comprising 1,551 for regular postgraduate admissions and 214 for performance-based programmes, while 5,848 candidates have already frozen their allotted seats. Candidates have until 11.59 pm on Saturday to accept their seats. Candidates who registered for the counselling process can check their allotment results by logging into the official website, tgeapcet.nic.in, using their application number and password. On July 4, the Council released a mock seat allotment list for students. Once the results are out, interested students have to complete the self-reporting process on the official website between July 10 and July 14, 2026, to confirm their admission.
