KSHRC orders probe into alleged denial of basic amenities in Edamalakkudy
The crisis is reportedly due to the non-receipt of government grants and plan funds for the past six months.Commission Chairperson Alexander Thomas issued the order based on a complaint submitted by writer K.P. Subash Chandran, who drew attention to the issue following newspaper reports. The commission has directed the officials to submit their report by August 7. The order further stated that food distribution across 12 anganwadis in the tribal hamlet has hit a roadblock. Furthermore, due to the lack of funds, panchayat staff members have not received their salaries.The commission also ordered a probe into allegations that the Forest department is creating hurdles regarding basic necessities of the tribal population, including drinking water, electricity, transportation, and housing. According to the order, residents alleged that they cannot even construct a toilet without the Forest department’s approval.Additionally, the tribal community claimed that ₹50 lakh was paid to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) to bring electricity to seven tribal settlements. Still, power lines have not yet been laid. The order noted that residents blamed this on the contractor halting work due to obstacles raised by the Forest department.
