Speaking to Hindi Rush, the director, who collaborated with Karisma Kapoor on films including Jaanwar, Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya and Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love, recalled that after Karisma’s engagement to Abhishek Bachchan ended, he was surprised to learn she was set to marry Sunjay.“Suddenly I heard she was going to marry Sunjay. I never understood that decision,” he said. Darshan chose to speak cautiously about the marriage, adding that he did not want to comment extensively because Sunjay was no longer alive and the couple had children together. “Someone has passed away, and they have children. I don’t think I have the right to speak about that. Karisma adapted very well to Sunjay’s family. He came from a wealthy family and they had known each other since childhood. But an actress has to be handled very delicately. There were many things that Karisma found quite odd, yet she adjusted because she had decided to.” The filmmaker recalled travelling with the couple to Canada during the shooting of Mere Jeevan Saathi, saying he sensed that something was amiss in the relationship. “We once travelled together to Canada during the shooting of Mere Jeevan Saathi. Sunjay was with us. But there was something lacking. Every relationship should feel complete, and somehow this one felt incomplete.” Darshan also revealed that he was surprised when he learnt Karisma had decided to marry Sunjay soon after her engagement to Abhishek Bachchan ended.Story continues below this ad Darshan had earlier called the marriage ‘an ugly turn’ This is not the first time Darshan has spoken about Karisma Kapoor’s marriage. In an earlier interview with journalist Vickey Lalwani, he described it as “an ugly turn” in the actor’s life. “They were friends, they had never been a couple. We went to Delhi several times, we never saw them as a couple. Some things are destined to happen. It was an ugly turn in her life. She wanted to be a domesticated type of wife, but she became a character from a doll’s house. She had seen the world, had done everything. She didn’t want to be playing golf on a Saturday evening. She wanted to spend time at home, with her family. She was more of a homely girl. It’s very sad. I feel for her.” When asked if Karisma had become a “trophy wife” after marriage, Darshan said she found herself in a world that never truly suited her. “I think that’s where the problems came from, for the family. That’s what she had become. She was placed into a world that was not hers. Delhi has its own culture, and she wasn’t fitting into that culture. They lived in a huge, palatial house, with an endless number of cars. She had seen everything, she was Raj Kapoor’s granddaughter; fame, success, she was the number one heroine for a duration. (AI-generated Image)The Jharkhand High Court has said that a wife suffering from “some health issues” cannot become a ground for divorce and upheld an order refusing divorce to a man who claimed his wife was mentally ill and deserted him. Justices Sujit Narayan Prasad and Sanjay Prasad were of the view that the husband had himself “dismantled” the matrimonial home as he had left the wife at her home and refused to take her back.“Life is made up of good times and bad, and the bad times can bring with it terrible illnesses and extreme hardships. The partners in a marriage must weather these storms and embrace the sunshine with equanimity. Any person may have bad health; this is not their fault, and most times, it is not within their control,” the July 21 order read. The couple married on January 30, 2015, following which the husband claimed that he noticed that his wife was suffering from a mental health disorder and did not understand a man and wife “relationship”. Justices Sujit Narayan Prasad and Sanjay Prasad observed that the husband made no efforts to “restore” the wife to the matrimonial home. According to the husband, the wife was suffering from a “chronic” and “incurable” mental disorder and was not fit to lead a married life. The husband claimed that when he informed his in-laws about the physical and mental condition of the wife, they came to his house in anger, threatened him, and returned. The husband alleged the marriage was performed by hiding important facts from him. Further, he also claimed that he took his wife to a psychiatrist and at different places such as Bangalore, Gaya, Ranchi, Jamshedpur, and Durgapur, where she was medically examined by various specialist doctors, but as per the doctors, the disease was incurable. The husband then filed for divorce in the family court on the grounds of desertion and mental disorder. Before the family court, it was claimed by the wife that after the marriage, they were living together happily for a period of three months, but later on, her husband and his family members started demanding additional dowry from her. The wife contended to ensure that she led a peaceful life, her father deposited Rs 1 lakh in the account of her husband.Story continues below this ad The wife further alleged that the in-laws then started to demand further dowry and when it was not fulfilled, then she was physically and mentally assaulted. It also came on record that the husband left the wife at her home on July 10, 2017, and never tried to bring her back. After evaluation the evidence and the arguments, the family court judge refused to grant a divorce to the couple. The husband then approached the high court against the order of the family court. ‘Dismantled matrimonial home’ The high court stated that, as per law, desertion was continuous event and as a reason for divorce, there must be ‘desertion’ at least for two years before a case was filed for obtaining divorce. The court noted that the wife lived with the husband in her matrimonial home for two and a half years and that the husband had himself left the wife at her home. The court was of the view, “it was the husband who dismantled the matrimonial home, and therefore, he cannot take advantage of his own wrong”. The court observed that during the family court proceedings, the wife had expressed her “readiness” and “willingness” to resume the relation, but the husband had refused to take her back without any valid reason. Therefore, the high court held that it was the husband who had ‘withdrawn’ from the wife without any just cause. On the allegation of mental disorder, the high court noted that the husband had neither produced any convincing evidence nor had he called any doctor or any staff of a hospital to support the allegation of the wife being mentally ill and that he had “ample” opportunity
Three members of a family from Hyderabad died and two others were injured in a road accident in the US state of California, according to information received by their family here on Tuesday.The vehicle in which the family was travelling collided with another vehicle on Monday night (Indian time), they said.The deceased were identified as Nazia Salma, her daughter and son, while her husband Shaik Naveed and their younger daughter sustained serious injuries in the accident and were admitted to hospital.Naveed from Saidabad here had gone to the United States about 10 years ago. The accident occurred when he was travelling with his wife and children.Naveed's father, Shaik Abdul Sayeed, said when they contacted his son, they received information regarding the accident from the police there.He requested the External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to provide emergency visas to the family members to enable them to travel to America.Meanwhile, Majlis Bachao Tahreek (MBT) spokesman Amjed Ullah Khan met the family members and appealed to the External Affairs Minister to facilitate immediate issuance of emergency visas to the family members so that they can travel to the US. Today, the Kapoor surname is synonymous with Bollywood. Boney Kapoor has produced several notable Hindi films, Anil Kapoor remains among its biggest stars, and the family’s legacy now spans multiple generations. But long before all this, there was a one-room kholi in Mumbai’s Tilak Nagar where the entire Kapoor family lived together. There were common toilets, mounting debts, and a producer who never quite found commercial success despite spending decades in the film industry.Surinder Kapoor was born in Peshawar and moved to Mumbai after the Partition. Looking for work, he reached out to his cousin, Prithviraj Kapoor, who invited him to the city. In a 2009 interview with Rediff, Surinder recalled that films were never part of his original plan. But Prithviraj Kapoor changed the course of his life by introducing him to filmmaker K Asif. “I came to Mumbai in 1950. I was 27 years old then. I am from Peshawar. When I told my cousin Prithviraj Kapoor that I wanted to come to Mumbai for a job, he asked me to come over. When I came to Mumbai, I didn’t think I would join films. But Prithviraj was very nice. As soon as I came to Mumbai by Frontier Mail, he took me to K Asif and got me a job as an assistant director on the sets of Mughal-E-Azam,” Surinder had said. He later worked as Geeta Bali’s secretary, a relationship that would prove pivotal when he decided to become a producer. Living in Raj Kapoor’s outhouse and a one-room kholi Before finding a home of their own, Surinder Kapoor and his wife lived in Raj Kapoor’s outhouse — the small room above the garage that was usually occupied by the driver’s family. Later, they moved to Tilak Nagar, where the growing family lived in a one-room chawl. Every floor had a single one-room-kitchen unit. There were three common toilets,” he recalled. But I had told Geeta that if I ever make a film, it would be with her only. Geeta helped me get financiers,” Surinder had said. The film failed, and so did several others.Story continues below this ad “In fact, I could not give a single hit in my entire career but still, financiers and distributors put their money in my projects,” he said. His biggest setback came when the Rajesh Khanna-starrer Shahzaada failed at the box office. Watching his father’s struggles left a deep impression on Boney Kapoor. In a 2003 interview with The Times of India, he admitted that witnessing Surinder Kapoor’s financial stress had initially put him off filmmaking altogether. “I didn’t want to become a filmmaker. Although my father had pinned his hopes on Ek Shriman Ek Shrimati, the film did average business. Then, when the high-budget, Rajesh Khanna-starrer Shahzaada bombed at the box office, my father was tense for days. Around then, I decided to myself that I would have nothing to do with filmmaking.”Story continues below this ad When everything fell apart The family’s biggest crisis arrived in the mid-1970s. Surinder Kapoor developed heart problems while one of his productions was underway. The film’s director died before completing the shoot. Another filmmaker stepped in to finish it, but when the film was finally released, it failed commercially. “Around 1976, my father took ill. We had a film on the floors, called Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan. Another calamity occurred. Our director died midway through the shoot… The film was released in 1978, and it flopped.
