Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has swung into the record books with the second-largest global opening weekend of all time.Spider-Man: Brand New Day Global Box Office Collection Day 4The latest instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has earned $927 million worldwide in its opening weekend, according to figures reported by Variety. The film’s debut places it behind only Avengers: Endgame, which opened to $1.2 billion globally in 2019.The achievement also puts Brand New Day comfortably ahead of Avengers: Infinity War, which previously held the third-largest worldwide opening with $640 million. The scale of the debut underlines the continued box office strength of Spider-Man, one of cinema’s most commercially successful superhero characters. The film generated $572 million across 66 international markets, while its domestic opening reached $355 million. The overseas performance accounted for the larger share of its global earnings, with several major territories delivering record-breaking or franchise-leading starts.China emerged as the film’s biggest international market, contributing $121 million during the opening weekend. The United Kingdom followed with $49 million, while Mexico generated $38.3 million. South Korea added $25 million to the international total.Spider-Man: Brand New Day also set opening-weekend benchmarks in several other markets. The film earned $26.6 million in France, $31.8 million in India, $23.8 million in Brazil and $15.6 million in Spain. The strong performance in China is particularly significant for the film’s long-term box office prospects. Hollywood releases have delivered inconsistent results in the market in recent years, but Spider-Man has continued to maintain considerable popularity among mainland audiences. With such a substantial launch, Brand New Day is now being positioned as a potential contender to cross the $2 billion mark globally. Only seven films in cinema history have achieved that milestone, placing the latest Spider-Man release on a path towards an exceptionally rare box office record. The film follows Spider-Man: No Way Home, which earned approximately $1.9 billion worldwide after its release in 2021 despite not receiving a theatrical release in China. The earlier film benefited from the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as their respective versions of Spider-Man, while Brand New Day marks a new chapter for Holland’s Peter Parker.Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is Holland’s fourth standalone film as the web-slinger. The cast includes Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman and Mark Ruffalo. The film’s record-setting opening has established a strong foundation for its theatrical run, with its performance in China and other major international markets expected to play a key role in determining whether it can reach the $2 billion milestone.About the AuthorTrisha BhattacharyaTrisha Bhattacharya is a Senior Content Producer at Livemint, with over two years of experience covering entertainment news from India and beyond. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani found himself excluded from the list of speakers at the funeral of Army Sergeant Angel Sarah Rampersad in Queens on Friday, despite reportedly preparing a eulogy for the fallen soldier, according to a report by the New York Post that cited multiple unnamed sources present at the event.Mayor Seen Reviewing Speech On iPad, Never Called To StageMr Mamdani, seated in the fourth row of the church in Ozone Park, was said to have been going through his planned remarks on an iPad while other dignitaries, including New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, were invited to speak. A source who attended the funeral told the New York Post that names were being called out one after another, but the mayor's was not among them. The same source described Mr Mamdani appearing visibly frustrated as the ceremony progressed, glancing toward his staff before eventually putting his tablet away once it became clear he would not be asked to the podium. New York City's mayoral office did not respond to requests for comment on the matter, the report said.According to insiders cited in the report, the decision to leave Mr Mamdani off the speakers' list may have stemmed from the political leanings of Sergeant Rampersad's family, who were described as supporters of US President Donald Trump and were said to be uncomfortable with the mayor's presence at the podium. Mr Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, has been a polarising figure in New York politics, known for his vocal criticism of Israel and of past US military action against Iran.A separate source connected to the funeral arrangements reportedly said the family wanted to keep the service free of political undertones, given the more conservative leanings within the family.Soldier Was Among Three Killed In Jordan Missile StrikeSergeant Rampersad, 28, was one of three American soldiers killed on July 17 in an Iranian missile strike on the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. She had grown up in a family based in Ozone Park, graduated from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and later joined the US Army, reportedly following in the footsteps of an uncle who had also served. The report also noted that it remains unclear whether Mr Mamdani visited Sergeant Rampersad's family in the days following her death, a customary gesture typically extended by New York City's leadership in such circumstances. No mention of any such visit was found on his official schedule or social media accounts, according to the report. In the days leading up to the funeral, Mr Mamdani reportedly took part in a housing-related event involving a double-decker bus tour and gave interviews to several national publications. He has also faced criticism in recent weeks over his handling of a Legionnaires' disease outbreak in the city that has claimed multiple lives, even as he continued to promote his proposal for city-run grocery stores.Rather than delivering the eulogy in person, Mr Mamdani's office later released his prepared remarks, describing them as "remarks as prepared." In the drafted speech, he had intended to reflect on the sacrifice made by fallen soldiers, noting that Sergeant Rampersad had given up her future so that others could safely enjoy theirs. The funeral, held at Calvary Assembly of God, drew hundreds of mourners including family members, fellow soldiers, neighbours and members of the public, with the soldier's favourite gospel hymns playing through the service. Daisy Davis-Credle, president of the Queens Sunday School Association, was quoted in the report describing Sergeant Rampersad as someone respected across ranks for her manner and leadership.Governor Hochul, who addressed mourners during the service, was followed by Ozone Park Residents Block Association President Sam Esposito, State Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr, and Mr Richards. City Councilman Frank Morano, seated near the mayor during the service, told the New York Post he had expect
Trump praised Netanyahu's role in the conflict with Iran, writing: “He is fighting against the Islamic Republic of Iran.”Trump's comments came after Netanyahu's office sharply criticized Mamdani over his suggestion that New York's legal department is examining what authority the city has to act on the International Criminal Court's (ICC) arrest warrant against the Israeli prime minister.(AFP)US President Donald Trump on Monday (July 20) declared that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "will not be arrested" while visiting the United States, weighing into a growing political dispute sparked by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's remarks that his administration is exploring whether local authorities could detain the Israeli leader during the UN General Assembly in September.Trump's comments came after Netanyahu's office sharply criticized Mamdani over his suggestion that New York's legal department is examining what authority the city has to act on the International Criminal Court's (ICC) arrest warrant against the Israeli prime minister."Benjamin Netanyahu will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form, while in the United States of America."Trump praised Netanyahu's role in the conflict with Iran, writing: "He is fighting against the Islamic Republic of Iran."He also blamed Iran's leadership for decades of violence, adding: "The only ones that should be arrested are the people that led Iran into this unprecedented SPIRAL OF DEATH AND DESTRUCTION, something that should have been dealt with years ago, by previous Presidents!"Although Trump did not mention Mamdani by name, his remarks came amid the controversy over the mayor's comments regarding Netanyahu's planned visit to New York.Mamdani: 'Netanyahu belongs in The Hague'The dispute began after Mamdani told The New York Times that his administration was consulting the New York City Law Department about the extent of the mayor's legal authority if Netanyahu visits for the UN General Assembly."I believe that Prime Minister Netanyahu belongs in The Hague."Calling Netanyahu a war criminal, Mamdani added: "He's a war criminal who has been charged by the International Criminal Court."While emphasizing that the city would not create new laws, he said: "Whatever the law allows me to do in New York City, that's what we will do."It described the ICC as: "A kangaroo court that has no jurisdiction over Americans or Israelis."The office also called the warrant against Netanyahu "bogus" and argued it was issued by former ICC prosecutor Karim Khan shortly before allegations of sexual misconduct against him became public."Instead of backing Khan's criminal behaviour, Mr. Mamdani should focus on fixing the damage his policies have caused New York."The statement added that the mayor appeared more interested in targeting: "The leader of the Jewish state and the only democracy in the Middle East."Israel defends Gaza campaignNetanyahu's office also defended Israel's military operations in Gaza, saying the Israel Defense Forces had taken extraordinary steps to reduce civilian casualties while fighting Hamas. The statement accused Hamas of using civilians as human shields and rejected allegations of war crimes.ICC arrest warrantThe controversy stems from arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court in November 2024 against Netanyahu and former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant. The ICC said there were reasonable grounds to believe the two leaders bore responsibility for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity during Israel's military campaign in Gaza, including allegations related to the use of starvation as a method of warfare and attacks against civilians.Israel has rejected the allegations and disputes the ICC's jurisdiction. The United States is not a party to the Rome Statute, meaning it has no treaty obligation to arrest or extradite individuals sought by the court.UNGA visit in focusNetanyahu is expected to travel to New York in September for the annual United
