Leaders of Andhra Pradesh Primary Teachers’ Association (APPTA) on Sunday demanded the immediate release of the salaries of Samagra Shiksha employees, which have been pending for the last two months. In a statement, the association’s State president K. Prakash Rao and general secretary M. G. Mehdi urged the government to implement a permanent mechanism to ensure salary payments on a fixed date every month and adopt measures to provide financial security to the Samagra Shiksha employees. They said approximately 23,000 Samagra Shiksha employees working under the Department of School Education across 28 districts of Andhra Pradesh had not received their salaries for the past two months and were facing severe financial and psychological hardships.“It is deeply distressing that these employees, who serve as the backbone of the government education system, are being forced into debt to support their families and meet basic living expenses,” they said. The APPTA leaders said that those awaiting salaries included teaching and non-teaching staff of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs), Cluster Resource Mobile Teachers, Management Information System (MIS) coordinators, data entry operators, accounts staff, site engineers, physiotherapists, Inclusive Education Resource Teachers, messengers, part-time instructors, District Project Office staff and several other categories of employees. They said many employees were unable to meet essential expenses such as house rent, monthly bank loan instalments, children’s education fees, medical expenses for elderly family members, treatment costs for pregnant women, and the purchase of basic necessities. While some employees have borrowed money from relatives and friends, others have reportedly pledged household belongings to sustain their families.“Despite these challenging circumstances, Samagra Shiksha employees continue to discharge their responsibilities without interruption. These include managing educational programmes in government schools, administering Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, providing services to children with special needs, conducting training programmes, managing educational data and implementing government directives and initiatives,” they said. The association expressed concern that despite submitting several representations to the authorities concerned, no solution had been provided so far. They urged the government to recognise this issue not merely as an administrative matter but as an urgent humanitarian concern affecting the livelihoods of 23,000 families and to respond without delay. Former employees of CorroHealth, a US-based healthcare analytics company, who were laid-off, welcomed the decision to provide them gross salaries for five months as additional compensation. The decision came following a government-level discussion with the company representatives held on Monday (July 20, 2026). Around 800 employees of the firm in its Kochi and Kozhikode units had lost their job. The company agreed to pay the compensation at a meeting convened by Labour Minister Bindu Krishna in Thiruvananthapuram.“The company has agreed to pay gross salaries for five months, in addition to the full and final settlement amount paid to the employees earlier. The management has informed that the amount will be paid on July 26. The company has also agreed to issue all necessary documents, including relieving letters, without any adverse remarks to all the affected employees,” the Minister said. She added the government was committed to helping the affected workers.Vishnu T.P., a representative of the employees, who attended the talks said the compensation package was the best available option for the affected workforce. “We were afraid that nothing positive would emerge from the discussions. At least we could get such a package,” Mr. Vishnu added.Jazil Aboobacker, who was with the company’s Kozhikode unit and took part in the talks, said the compensation has come as a breathing space for those who lost their jobs. “We can look out for other jobs without worrying about next month’s salary now,” he said.Ludhia Fernandez, who was in the Kochi unit, exuded happiness that the compensation package is much more than what many of them expected. She said the responses from most of her colleagues to the outcome of the talks was positive. “We were almost sure that the company will not reopen. All that we could hope was a fair compensation,” she said. The Minister said though the company had proposed to relocate 12 per cent of the laid off employees, the workers were apprehensive of such a solution and had raised doubts about job security in the firm. Thrikkakara MLA Uma Thomas, Labour officials, and representatives of different trade unions attended the talks. Published - July 20, 2026 09:26 pm IST
