File | As of Wednesday (July 22, 2026), 41 people lost their lives during the current wave of floods since June, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). At least 31 died in the last 48 hours, mostly in eastern Assam’s Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat districts.“I have interacted with many victims during my tour of the flood-affected areas. They told me some people never returned after venturing out to satiate their curiosity about floods,” Mr. Mahanta, who represents the Asom Gana Parishad from Kaliabor Assembly constituency, told journalists recently.“We have been advising people not to go too close to the overflowing rivers. People in flood-affected or flood-prone areas should take care and desist from going out to see what floods are like,” he said after touring some flood-hit areas this week.Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who toured the worst-affected Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat districts on Wednesday (July 22, 2026) to assess the extent of the damage and review the ongoing rescue and relief operations, said about 100 people remain missing in the devastating floods.“The situation is extremely serious. Many villages remain underwater, and there are areas where rescue teams have not been able to reach yet. Nearly 100 people in the worst-hit areas are still missing,” he said.According to the ASDMA, the water levels of the rivers Desang and Dikhow in Sivasagar district, and Dhansiri in Golaghat, have been rising. “Citizens are advised to stay away from these rivers,” it said on Thursday (July 23, 2026). “The second-largest number of foreigners deported or expelled is from Myanmar, followed by Nigerians,” Assam Accord Implementation Minister Atul Bora said in reply to a question from Congress MLA Abdur Rahim Ahmed. File | The State government told the Assembly on Wednesday that 2,089 foreigners were deported from January 2016 to June 2026 for entering or staying in Assam illegally. Among these, 2,023 were from Bangladesh.“The second-largest number of foreigners deported or expelled is from Myanmar, followed by Nigerians,” Assam Accord Implementation Minister Atul Bora said in reply to a question from Congress MLA Abdur Rahim Ahmed.According to data provided by the Minister, who is also the president of the Asom Gana Parishad, the designated State authorities detected and deported 39 nationals from Myanmar and 18 from Nigeria, two each from Afghanistan, Russia, and Ukraine, and one each from Kenya, Pakistan, and Uganda over the past 10 years.To another question from Raijor Dal chief and Sibsagar legislator Akhil Gogoi, the State government gave the religious break-up of those identified as foreigners in Assam till May 31, 2026.The bulk of 1,72,673 such people identified were Muslims (1,11,414), while the remaining 61,259 included 61,189 Hindus and 70 Christians.‘117 expelled’Mr. Bora said 1,572 foreigners staying illegally in Assam were sent back to their home countries from 2025 to June 30, 2026 while 117 others were expelled during this period.“We are sending back illegal foreigners to Bangladesh in accordance with a communication from the Ministry of Home Affairs on May 2, 2025,” he said.
