UNSW Sydney opens Bengaluru campus; V-C promises industry-driven education and high employability

Patil, unveiling the commemorative plaque during the inauguration of the UNSW Bengaluru campus here on Thursday. | Prof. Brungs, who spoke to The Hindu after the inauguration, said, “AI technology is a challenge to universities in India as well as Australia. Hence, our curriculum and framework are designed in a way that students learn using AI tools and develop job ready skills.”“The UNSW is the number one university in Australia for employability, as we have 90% of our students employed as soon as they graduate. We want to bring similar track record in Bengaluru. What we do is we get industry engaged with our students right from first year of UG programmes. Hence, all our courses have industry problems, and students have to work all their way through to solve these issues. India’s National Education Policy (2020) also speaks of the same.”The university has limited number of seats for each programme to only 30 so that each student from this cohort understands the ecosystem of working in the industry, he stressed.Around 91 students have been enrolled in the UNSW’s new batch for four different programmes, including Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Bachelor of Data Science and Decisions and Masters in Cyber Security.“That’s the way that we know almost guarantees employability when they leave the university. Besides, the university has kept artificial intelligence in focus and framed their curriculum as well as assessment strategy. For some of your assessments, students have to use human-to-human inputs and cannot use AI tools. Because we want to make sure that people learn human skills like critical thinking and problem solving. For other assessments, it is compulsory to use AI tools and skills because it tests your ability to use AI and be job ready when you step out,” Prof. Brungs said.Explaining the reason behind choosing Bengaluru to open their international campus, Prof. Brungs said, “Bengaluru is the beating heart of start-ups in India. The UNSW is the number one university in Australia for innovation of start-ups. We have more start-ups come out of the UNSW than all the other universities in Australia combined.”Although other foreign universities, including University of Liverpool and University of Lancaster, are going to open their international campuses in Bengaluru, Prof. Brungs said.“Bengaluru has a relatively educated populace, but there are more people who need to be educated and get skilled to earn good jobs. Hence, the opportunity here is extraordinary to us and youngsters. You can have a number of foreign universities come, and all of us work hard to meet the demand that’s here.”He also highlighted that there are many students in India who are intelligent and aspiring, yet lack access to quality higher education.“This is where our scholarships and various other programmes support such students pursue higher education at our university. 6,576 abandoned vehicles have been identified across Bengaluru, including 2,533 by the police and 4,043 based on citizen complaints. | The Minister chaired a virtual meeting and instructed city corporation officials to prepare corporation-wise action plans and operational schedules to accelerate the removal of abandoned vehicles from roadsides and public spaces across the five city corporations. He also directed officials to ensure strict monitoring of field-level staff. Mr. Byre Gowda directed the police department and city corporations to work together during the drive. Officials were asked to maintain accurate records of identified, towed, and released vehicles. To strengthen enforcement, the Minister directed that each traffic police station deploy two dedicated personnel exclusively for the abandoned vehicle removal drive. Marshals will also accompany ward officers while issuing notices to vehicle owners.700 km footpaths reclaimedMr. Byre Gowda said encroachments have been cleared from 773 km of footpaths across Bengaluru and directed officials to continue the drive. He also instructed them to impose penalties on repeat encroachers.He also expressed concern over vehicles being parked on cleared footpaths and instructed officials to prevent such violations. Wherever feasible, wider footpaths should be developed into aesthetically designed public spaces without compromising pedestrian movement, he said. The Minister also instructed officials to carry out footpath repairs simultaneously with encroachment removal and expedite pending tenders.Karthik Reddy, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said 6,576 abandoned vehicles have been identified across Bengaluru, including 2,533 by the police and 4,043 based on citizen complaints. Passengers will also have time for shopping in Sagara before returning to Bengaluru the same night.KSRTC said in a release that the package fare includes the entrance fee to Jog Falls, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, making it a comprehensive weekend travel option. The fare has been fixed at ₹3,300 for adults and ₹3,000 for children aged between six and 12 years.The corporation has appealed to the public to make use of the package tour. Bengaluru became part of a transcontinental drive christened “140 Years, 140 Places”, conducted by Mercedes-Benz to celebrate 140 years since Carl Benz, the German mechanical engineer and inventor widely regarded as the father of the modern automobile, filed the patent for the world’s first automobile in 1886. Departing from Mercedes-Benz’s global headquarters in Stuttgart earlier this year, three S-Class sedans have travelled more than 40,000 kilometres across 23 countries and five continents, bringing the global anniversary celebration to Bengaluru.These cars are named after the pioneers of the automobile: Carl Benz, Bertha Benz (Carl’s wife and business partner who undertook the world’s first long-distance road trip of 66 miles in 1888 to prove the car worked) and Gottlieb Daimler (a German engineer and industrial designer, who along with partner Wilhelm Maybach, independently developed a high-speed four-stroke engine and built the first four-wheeled motorised carriage in 1886). As part of the India leg of the commemoration of the brand’s 140-year legacy, Carl and Bertha, two S-Class saloons from the anniversary convoy, were driven to two offices of Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI) at Brigade Tech Gardens in Brookfield and Embassy Crest in Whitefield in Bengaluru on Tuesday.MBRDI, the Mercedes-Benz Group’s largest research and development centre outside Germany, contributes engineering and technology expertise across a wide spectrum of the company’s global development programmes.Manu Saale, Managing Director and CEO of MBRDI, said, “The Bengaluru stop carries particular significance for MBRDI, as the organisation marks its 30th anniversary this year.” MBRDI marked the occasion with celebrations across its Bengaluru campuses. The convoy will continue on its global route before returning to Stuttgart in October this year.MBRDI is the largest research and development centre of Mercedes-Benz Group AG outside Germany. Established in 1996, it plays a prominent role in the development of technologies related to connected, autonomous and electric mobility.
