The police have arrested Vimal’s driver Mithilesh Kumar in the case.After the attack, he was rushed to Narayan Medical College and Hospital in Jamuhar, Rohtas district, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.According to police sources, the driver has admitted his involvement in the murder during interrogation. On August 2, 2026, Magadh Range Inspector General (IG) Vikas Vaibhav also inspected the crime spot and confirmed the arrest of the driver. He added that the driver repeatedly changed his statement during questioning, which deepened the police’s suspicions.Later, Aurangabad Police also issued a press statement stating, “Police have arrested one accused individual [the driver] involved in the incident.”Based on a complaint filed by the deceased’s family, an FIR has been registered under relevant sections at Barun Police Station (Case No. 312/26, dated August 2, 2026).“Acting on information provided by the arrested driver, a team of divers recovered the iron lever pipe used in the crime from the Patna-Barun-Baura canal located near the crime scene. The arrested accused is being sent to judicial custody. The investigation into the case is ongoing,” Aurangabad Police wrote in the statement.Rohtas District Magistrate Deepak Kumar Mishra said that though the incident has taken place in Aurangabad, the investigation is being conducted in coordination with the Rohtas police.His family members and relatives gathered at his apartment in Gola Road in Danapur, Patna. Vimal is survived by his wife, Babita Kumari, and their two minor children — Vaibhavi Vimal (7) and Vivan (5).His wife accused Rajiv Ranjan Sing alias Sonu Singh, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram-Vilas) MLA of Dehri-on-Sone, of being behind his murder. Ms. Kumari said that the MLA used to call her husband every day and demand ₹25 lakh to ₹50 lakh.“Dehri MLA used to repeatedly call and demand ₹50 lakh to ₹25 lakh. He used to ask my husband to visit his home; last time he had called my husband on July 29, 2026 as well. My husband used to say that he had not done anything wrong, so from where would he get that much money? Whenever the MLA spoke, my husband would simply say, ‘Yes, sir; yes, sir.’ He kept pressuring him to pay the ₹50 lakh, and now he has been murdered,” Ms. Kumari said. Sreejith, has been placed under suspension following allegations of brutal police torture that led to the death of a 39-year-old man in Kundara, Kollam, Kerala.The suspension order was issued by District Police Chief (Kollam Rural) Shaji Sugunan after a preliminary inquiry revealed severe lapses in protocol.Siyad, a private bus driver and a resident of Perumpuzha, passed away on July 24 while undergoing treatment at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. According to the police chief’s order, CPO Sreejith committed grave indiscipline, negligence, and service rule violations by failing to conduct a proper physical body search or procure a mandatory medical certificate before detaining the victim, and ignoring his symptoms of illness at the station.Custodial violence one of the gravest affronts to the rule of law, says HCThe incident traces back to June 16, when two seventh-grade students from Siyad’s neighborhood went missing. Following a statement given by one of the children’s sisters, police officers visited Siyad’s residence at midnight and took him into custody. He was released the next day after the missing children were traced. However, Siyad’s health deteriorated significantly over the following weeks. He sought treatment at the taluk hospital on July 2 before being transferred to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital due to his worsening condition.Later an audio clip of Siyad’s daughter emerged online, alleging that her father was severely assaulted inside the police vehicle by Sub-Inspector Sampath and CPO Sreejith.The police department had initially denied the allegations.Following these revelations, the Home Minister had demanded an immediate report, prompting the transfer of the investigation to the District Crime Branch. Munir and Tarun Saxena on July 27 quashed an FIR registered under Section 87 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against a couple who had solemnised their marriage in February this year, after attaining majority.The couple had approached the court after the police filed the FIR against the woman’s husband on a complaint from the girl’s father, who alleged that the man had enticed his daughter into marrying him. However, the petitioners contended that they had solemnised their marriage of their own free will and that the police were unlawfully attempting to separate them despite the woman’s unequivocal choice to live with her husband.“The carrying on of this investigation into an adult’s free choice of her partner and the marriage between two major citizens of the country is not only an abuse of process of criminal law, but also gross violation of their fundamental right to liberty guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution. The liberty that a person, who is a major, enjoys, includes the liberty to marry a person of his/her choice. The police have no business in the matter to be nosy parkers. We have repeatedly reminded the police that it is no business of theirs to investigate marriages. They ought to investigate crimes.
