Census 2027 self-enumeration begins in Assam, suspended in two flood-hit districts
The 2027 exercise will be the first digital Census.

GUWAHATIBarring two flood-hit districts, self-enumeration for Census 2027 began in Assam on Sunday (August 2, 2026).Officials said census preparatory work has been suspended in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts, which are yet to recover from the floods in July, among the worst the State has witnessed.Most of the 82 people who died in the floods this year were from these two districts.“The self-enumeration, which began today (Sunday), marks an important step towards making Census 2027 more participatory and citizen-centric,” Biswajit Pegu, Director of Census Operations, told journalists. He urged the people of Assam to use the online facility and participate in the Census process.He further said that the facility on se.census.gov.in would remain active until August 16, ahead of the commencement of the house-listing operation and housing census on August 17.Mr. Pegu said the facility had been introduced to enable citizens to furnish their household information conveniently. After self-enumeration, trained enumerators would visit households to collect or confirm the requisite details.He highlighted the safeguards under the Census Act, 1948, to protect the confidentiality of information furnished by citizens.“Due to the prevailing flood situation, training programmes and other preparatory activities related to the Census in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts have been suspended until further orders,” he said.Narsing Pawar, Commissioner of Assam’s General Administration Department, said the State government would extend all necessary support for the smooth and successful conduct of Census 2027.Some 3.3 crore people applied for inclusion in the update National Register of Citizens, but 19.06 lakh could not make it to its complete draft published in August 2019.
