Sunil Limaye, a member of the Supreme Court-constituted Central Empowered Committee (CEC), held a meeting with Forest Department officials on Tuesday regarding the highly criticised Sharavathi Pumped Storage Project.Mr. Limaye met with Chief Conservator of Forests K.T. Hanumanthappa in Shivamogga to gather detailed information about the ₹10,240-crore project, which has been proposed by the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) to generate 2,000 MW of power. The project faces stiff resistance from numerous environmentalists and the residents of Shivamogga and Uttara Kannada districts. Objectors argue that the project will severely damage the pristine ecosystem of the Western Ghats. Furthermore, because the proposed site falls within the Sharavathi Lion-Tailed Macaque Sanctuary, critics warn that it poses a direct threat to the endangered primate species. In light of these widespread objections, the Karnataka High Court has already stayed all groundwork for the project.Public AppealA delegation of Shivamogga residents, led by former Minister K.S. Eshwarappa, also met with the CEC member on Tuesday to submit a memorandum opposing the project. Mr. Eshwarappa urged the CEC to submit a report to the apex court recommending against the implementation of the power project.Eom/photos available Published - June 02, 2026 08:57 pm IST
